How to prevent a mother cat from eating or harming her kittens?

Hello. Make sure your Momma cat has a quiet, safe & secure area to have her kittens, away from noise, other pets, & weather. You can begin feeding her a good kitten food ( dry or canned ) and continue the kitten food up until the kittens are weaned . This will give her extra calories to maintain her pregnancy & provide plenty of rich milk for her kittens. She will probably not leave her babies for the first couple of days, so make sure her litter box, food & water are close by. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't allow the other cats in the room during labor. Despite them all getting along under normal circumstances doesn't mean their presence during labor won't stress Lovely. When cats are stressed during labor they can delay delivery of the kittens. She should be in a quiet room that is familiar to her. The number of people should be limited. With one person checking on her every few hours. As for after the kittens are born I wouldn't allow the other cats in the room without you. Again just because they get along doesn't mean that one of the cats won't hurt the kittens. Either Cara is a bad mother or this is a natural thing she is doing because the kittens are abnormal. Nature is hard and animals do things differently than people. If she keeps having litters that are born prematurely or are sickly that is a problem. I would suggest having her spayed so she can not have kittens anymore. Animals are very good a 'cleaning up after themselves', so if there was a dead little kitten then it isn't that surprising that the mom would eat it. In the future, removing the dead kittens before the mother can eat it is a good idea. In the mean-time, please monitor Venica for signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, painful abdomen, weakness), and if she shows any signs please bring her to a vet. Best of luck with Venica.

I would put Mamma in her own room with the kittens and give them as much space as possible. Make sure she has food, water, and a litter box. Check on them only once a day to make sure things are going well with her and her kittens. It sounds like you may be a bit of a distraction for her, so leaving her alone with the kittens and having them be her only focus may help with this situation. I hope this helps!

I would keep your boy cat away from the mother and kittens. Keep him indoors for now. Put food and water under your porch for the mother. She needs a kitten formulated food to help support nursing. I'd put some blankets under there as well to help keep them warm. If you can catch them, bring them indoors into their own room with food, water, a litter box, and a nesting box. Best of luck.
