Is my pregnant cat's loud purring and shallow breathing a sign of labor?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Daisy is panting and pregnant close to term then she is likely going in to labor. If she isn't close to being due she should see a Vet right away. I would have her somewhere quiet and calm. Keep children, a lot of people and animals out. If there isn't a kitten born in 2 hours with this panting she should be seen by a Vet. Panting in cats is not normal in any other situation. I wish you the best!

Although the timing would be right, normally signs of labour include restlessness and nesting. The closer to the birth they are, they more queens tend to sleep because of the extra weight put on and being more tired and less agile. So in general I would not say that this is a sign of imminent labour.

Stage 1 of labor can last up to 24 hours, but I would keep a close eye on her. Once she starts pushing she should not labor more than 4 hours without a kitten. I would contact your veterinarian as a precaution and simply let them know what is happening.

Your kitty will pick the place she thinks is perfect, so you can try to put the box where she is resting. No point in arguing with her. Cat mamas know best. So if she is coming for cuddles, give her cuddles as long as she wants them. eventually she will either go away to have her babies, or have them on your lap if she so sees fit.

This could be a sign that labor is near however it could be normal behavior for this stage of pregnancy. I would monitor Kawaii for any vaginal discharge, appetite change, hiding behavior or active contractions. If you notice any of those signs it is a more reliable indicator of labor. If she has any green discharge, contractions without producing any kittens, or has a foul smelling vaginal discharge she needs to be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Lola should be ready to have her kittens soon if you are accurate on her breeding date. Her mammary chain should be fully developed by now. If you are able to do so, measure her rectal temperature daily. It typically drops to below 99 degrees F about 24hrs prior to labor. If she hasn't been to a veterinarian recently, it is a good idea to have X-rays taken prior to the birth. It not only confirms the pregnancy, but let's you know how many kittens she is expecting. This is useful infornation during labor to know if Lola has had all the expected kittens or if there are more to come. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would be sure Mochi is in a quiet cool place with out many people and other animals. When stressed cats can delay labor. I would leave her be and check on her every 30 mins. If she has been actively contracting for more than 2 hours with out a birth of a kitten I would have her seen by a Vet as that could indicate a problem. I wish Mochi the best!
