What is this thick vaginal discharge from my pregnant cat in labor?

Hello, it is normal to see some discharge from the vulva of pregnant cats. Additionally, cats may groom or lick the area during gestation and during the first stage of labor. Typically when they are going to give birth, they show nesting behaviors such as rearranging towels, looking for places to hide, and they may meow. In the second stage of labor you begin to see contractions and a shiny white membrane is visible from their vulva. Cookie may be going into labor soon. Hope this helps.

This is likely the amniotic sac or a placenta. If Iris has been having strong contractions without producing a kitten, she needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Never pull on anything that is hanging out of her since you don't know exactly what it is. Occasionally they can prolapse part of their uterus and if you pull on it you will make it drastically worse. It is hard to see clearly the extent of this lesion as the photo is a bit blurry. It definitely looks like an infected skin lesion....whether it started as a ruptured abscess, a traumatic wound or other...I cannot say for sure. This should be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible for proper treatment which should include a prescription antibiotic and wound cleaning. If it needs surgical debrisement, make sure the doctor is aware of the pregnancy. Hopefully it can just be cleaned without any sedation, but medication is going to be needed to treat the infection. There are numerous antibiotics that are safe for pregnant cats.

Hello, at this point, just give her some more time, as long as she does not seem to be in any distress. Milk letdown is often stimulated with uterine contractions & the physical stimulation of the kittens attaching to the nipples. Since I cannot see the actual discharge you are seeing, I cannot say if this is normal cervical secretions or a problem, so if you are very concerned, contact your veterinarian to examine her to make sure she is having a healthy pregnancy. That could definitely be mucous plug. It’s certainly not enough or abnormal enough for me to be panicking about anything serious. Leave her to her quiet area tonight and check on her every hours or two. If you do see larger amounts of fluid, dark discharge, foul-smelling discharge, or have other concerns, see a vet right away. It depends on how close to labor she is. Some pets may not stop eating until right before actual labor, while some may stop eating and lose appetite about a day or so before. Making sure she has a nest box to have her babies and keeping an eye on her for additional signs of labor such as visible contractions and pushing is best. If she continues to have discharge without going into labor, or is in labor for several hours without producing a kitten, seeking veterinary care ASAP is best to make sure there isn't an underlying problem or stuck kitten.

Hello. A cat is pregnant an average of 63 days. A mucous or slightly discolored discharge could very well indicate that your cat is in the early stages of labor.
