Can PetSmart take my unvaccinated kitten? How do I get him back?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'd be careful getting updates from the receptionist. They tend to not have any medical background or even the full story. I would call to ask to speak with the Vet who saw your dog or the practice owner or manager. Get the true story. Maybe they can tell you which shelter and if it wasn't expensive you can pay your bill. I doubt they had you sign paper work under false pretenses. We as vets don't want animals to suffer or die with out treatment. That is why we offer to take over their care at our own expense. There is a lot of emotional and compassion fatigue with in our profession and I can be 100% sure they did this to benefit your pet and not to purposely hurt or trick you. Good luck!

Kittens should really be with their mom receiving their mom's milk until they are about 8 weeks old. You may need to check with your municipality or local animal control to determine any legal issues there are or may be. In addition, you may want to look for kittens on more reputable sources such as your local animal shelter or rescue organizations near you. I hope this helps and best of luck to you!

It would be helpful to know if he has ever had any vaccinations before, but if you don't know the veterinarian can still give you a recommendation for a vaccine schedule. Oh no! That is very frustrating to not be told the truth, but it is a good thing you know now. It is a little difficult to assess risk if it is uncertain if your kitten was raised by its mother. If so, and she was vaccinated, she could have passed some maternal antibodies on to your kitty. The biggest risk for kittens is through exposure to other cats. If your kitty is an indoor kitty with no other contact with other cats this significantly decreases his risk. What is most important now is to start his vaccinations with your vet, to have him tested for the kitty viruses (feline leukemia and FIV), and to have him checked for intestinal parasites (if not already performed/dewormer given). Just because he is older does not mean he can not get his vaccines, he will just need less vaccines than a younger kittens. Typically we vaccinate with FVRCP (for kitty upper respiratory viruses and panleukopenia) and rabies. If your kitty will eventually be going outside then vaccination for feline leukemia (after a negative test) is important. Your family vet can set up a schedule for Chase at his first visit. I would follow the owner's wishes. It is good to keep cats updated on vaccines, and rabies vaccines are required by law. If you want to have them examined by a vet and receive appropriate vaccines, the vet can do so without prior records. Annual exams are recommend to monitor changes over time. If the owner decides to continue with regular vet care, then you can transfer the records to the new vet.

You should call your veterinarian and ask whether he recommends some pain medication for your cat or whether he wants to see him for a recheck. Sometimes cats can get painful especially at the injection site for a few days. He may not let you touch him because he may be angry at you for taking him to the vet....sometimes that happens too. Let him come to you. Pet him lightly when you feed him.
