Is OkoCat wood litter safe for cats if sawdust is a human carcinogen?

I've never heard of this litter causing a burning smell before, but if it is strong enough to bother you or is affecting your cat, switching back to the other litter may be a good idea. You can also see if an air purifier in the room helps as well. If you notice any signs of respiratory distress in your cat such as sneezing, trouble breathing, panting, coughing, etc, then moving Sweetie to another well ventilated room and changing the litter is best.

Their dust free paper non-clumping kind would be okay. The main objective is to use a litter that is less likely to get into the small incisions on her toes in case there is an open area. Any traditional clay or clumping litter is NOT recommended. Litter in the form of pellets that don’t break apart is what you are looking for. You can also use shredded paper. Some cats can definitely have issues with dusty litter, it can cause flare ups of asthma and may make your cat decide to go potty somewhere else. Though once it settles, it may not cause issues unless your cat is a very aggressive digger. I would recommend staying with the same brand of litter you used before, or you can look into non-clay litter options, like Feline Pine or Yesterday's News. If you do decide on a different type of litter, I would put it in a second litter box so that Chloe has the option to choose which type of litter she prefers.

I don't recommend to use this in case the wood has some sort of chemical treatment. Remember that Sadie will walk on the wood and then lick her feet later. It's safest to stick to products made for pets so that you know there are no hidden chemicals that could be toxic. Also, some cats do not like any litter other than normal, clay based litter. I recommend to offer two boxes, one with clay based litter and the other with the new litter and see which one she prefers. Otherwise she may start eliminating outside of the litter box. Silica litters are non toxic if ingested however If too much of the silica litter is eaten it could cause an intestinal obstruction. Silica litter can also cause respiratory irritation in cats with allergic airway disease like asthma. Since your kitten seems to like to eat the silica litter I recommend finding a different litter type that she is not interested in eating. Anything you bring from outdoors will carry a small risk of exposure to things like intestinal parasites, but overall these risks are very small and natural sand should be just fine to use. Heating it in the oven and then letting it cool is a great way to minimize risk.

I think this should be safe for your young kittens to use. They may be inquisitive at first about the new litter but they probably won’t ingest enough to cause an issue.
