Is natural sea sand safe for cat litter if I bake it in the oven?

You can use the beach sand, you do not need to clean it. But you can also use shredded paper and wood shavings or wood pellets if available. Seeing that you are in Tamil Nadu it is likely that the heat of the day pretty much sterilises the sand anyway (I remember trying to walk on the beach in Chennai one...immediately had blisters on the soles of my feet.) I think this should be safe for your young kittens to use. They may be inquisitive at first about the new litter but they probably won’t ingest enough to cause an issue. As far as I am aware only sawdust that is treated with certain chemicals would be carcinogenic when inhaled. I doubt that the OkoCat litter is a risk for your kitties, but if you are afraid that it might be, why not change to "normal clumping cat litter or the cat litter made from plant material (which is not clumping, I am afraid).

I would recommend using shredded paper in her litter box instead of sand or litter if she has infected toes. Do not apply topical medication. If she is licking her feet excessively she may need an e-collar or something to help prevent her from licking. It is better to use coarse small rocks instead of sand and in general it would be better to get them from the store where they come already clean and free of other organisms which may affect the environment of the tank. Silica litters are non toxic if ingested however If too much of the silica litter is eaten it could cause an intestinal obstruction. Silica litter can also cause respiratory irritation in cats with allergic airway disease like asthma. Since your kitten seems to like to eat the silica litter I recommend finding a different litter type that she is not interested in eating. I don't recommend to use this in case the wood has some sort of chemical treatment. Remember that Sadie will walk on the wood and then lick her feet later. It's safest to stick to products made for pets so that you know there are no hidden chemicals that could be toxic. Also, some cats do not like any litter other than normal, clay based litter. I recommend to offer two boxes, one with clay based litter and the other with the new litter and see which one she prefers. Otherwise she may start eliminating outside of the litter box.
