My newborn kitten is crying loudly and can't pee or poop. Help!

Poor baby! I am worried that she is having diarrhea and an increased urgency to go or severe constipation. Since she is so uncomfortable and so tiny and young, I would strongly recommend to have her seen by your vet as soon as possible. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and get her started on the proper meds to help her feel better. They will also be able to give her fluids if needed. With a 2 month old kitten crying in the litter box I would be concerned about diarrhea or even constipation. If this is the case I would recommend bringing Kajin to be evaluated at your veterinarian to make sure there is no intestinal parasites and to make sure this is what is going on. If she is experiencing a lot of pain than she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She may be just having some constipation issues but a vet could check to make sure she doesn't have a congenital malformation and/or problems with her hips or pelvis. If it is just constipation than you could add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to her diet to increase the fiber and see if that helps.

Hi and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the kitten is less than 8 weeks old, it should be fed milk replacer and not cat food. Kittens digestive systems are not yet mature enough to handle regular food and giving them this may cause stomach upset. If the kitten cannot go to the bathroom or is having trouble doing this, you can stimulate her to go by rubbing her underside with a warm washcloth. There is also a congenital abnormality where kittens are born without a anus and therefore cannot defecate called atresia ani. It is rare but can occur. If you have tried to get her to defecate and she is still not going, you may need to take her into her veterinarian for further examination. Best of luck!

Crying can be because he’s hungry, cold, or has to go potty. Make sure you are feeding him often enough with kitten milk replacer if he is not nursing his mother. Stimulating him to pee and poop with a warm damp cloth around his tail should be done several times a day to keep him regular. Kittens can die quickly if they get cold so make sure he is snuggled in a warm place or with another animal. Now that she is 3-4 weeks old she may be peeing or pooping without your knowledge. Go ahead and start teaching her the litter box but make sure it is small enough that she can get in and out. If you haven't already I would also start weaning her to cat food. At first you will still have to supplement with formula but you start by putting all for feet in canned food on a paper plate. Soon she will start eating that. And once she gets a little older, approximately 6 week, you can start adding softened kibble. The fact that she is still playful and acting normally, I do not think she is block and not urinating or pooping. Usually they will become lethargic. If you still haven't see any irons or poop in the next day or she becomes lethargic then I would see your vet for an exam. They will be able to tell if she is constipated or if the bladder is really large. I hope this helps!

Has she pooped? Mothers lick their rear ends to stimulate them to defecate. You may want to take a warm damp wash cloth and try to gently wash her rear end. Also kittens at that age are used to snuggling with their warm litter mates. Snuggling her up close to you it with a stuffed animal may help as well. Good luck to both of you!
