Freezing weather: Should I move my stray cat's kittens indoors?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

I have adopted a stray cat. She had kittens October 4. She is a very good mommy and has hidden her kittens in a very secure place under some sheet metal behind some hay bales. It is supposed to drop below freezing through the night tonight. I am worried about the kittens. Should I try to move them inside, or are they better off with their mother? There is no way I could get her into the house.

I would set up a warm bed for them, and put in something like a hot water bottle covered in towels. They are just over four weeks old, and while it's time for them to wean, they are probably better with their mother. If the temperatures keep dropping, however, I would move them indoors.

    The most important aspect for their survival is their mother. If it is possible for you to create a shelter for them to leave where the mother would also come access this would be ideal. If the mother is friendly and you can coax her inside and bring the kittens too that would keep them all safe.

    If you do bring the kittens and the mother inside make sure they can have a private area to themselves. Under a bed, in a closet or even a whole room if you have the space.

Great question! During the first three weeks of life, kittens are unable to regulate their body temperature, so temperatures less than 27C can lead to hypothermia if their mother does not keep them warm. Usually by seven weeks of age, they can control their body temperature as well as an adult. Given your kittens are just over three weeks, this still may be a little bit cold for them. I would keep the temperature in their room a bit higher until they are closer to seven weeks of age. I hope this helps!

How lovely of you to look after these kittens! Your first option is to take them into the SPCA. They can get them checked out by a vet and find them a home for them. You could bring them inside when it's cold at night, but keep them in their own room separate from your dog. Make sure they have a litter box, food, and water in their room. Finally, you can make a shelter for them outside with blankets to help keep them warm at night. I hope this helps :-)

If you move them, she may move them back or somewhere else that you may not be able to monitor her. Provide plenty of fresh water for her. Feed her kitten food until the litter is weaned. Leave bowls close to her so she won't have to go far from her litter.

It might really stress her out to be inside if she's never been inside, so I would just leave out food for her, and set up a shelter for her and her kittens. I would try to catch her after the kittens have weaned, and have her spayed. If she will allow it, I would try to handle the kittens to tame them so you can find them homes. I hope this helps!
