My male cat is more affectionate with my partner. Do male cats prefer male owners?

Some kitties are "man"cats and like men better than women. It could be that his original owner was a man. It is normal. I have one like this, too. I got the cat and he decided he liked my husband better and now my husband belongs to him and I do not exist :D .

However, there are some diseases that may cause changes in attitude. This includes hyperthyroidism and rarely acromegaly. Other signs with these diseases include increased drinking and urinations, a ravenous appetite, and weight loss. This can be screened with routine bloodwork, so have him evaluated by your veterinarian for these. It is not uncommon for animals of the same sex to take longer to become friendly with one another than animals of the opposite sex. I find it to be more common in females than in males. They may see each other as competition for the male's attention. It may also be a simple territorial action that your established cat is making. I would consider perhaps a continued slow introduction to one another under your supervision. Cats be trained just as dogs (a little harder) with positive reinforcement. Your question doesn't really describe what is going on. If the cats are fearful of you, taking time to let them approach you, and making sure you're the one feeding them, etc, can help with bonding. A toy that can be played with from a distance, such as a feather on a stick or laser pointer can also help with bonding without stress. If they get stressed out from handling, taking a break is best. If the cats are having trouble with each other, making sure they both have their own access to food, water, litter, etc can help avoid competition over resources. A pheromone diffuser such as Feli-way can also be plugged in to common rooms to help reduce stress.

I'm so sorry for your loss. In general, cats tend to get along better with members of the opposite sex so you may want to consider adopting a male. Kittens can be quite annoying to older cats, but with an older cat it may be difficult to determine what their personality is like prior to adoption and older cats are not quite as adaptable as kittens are. If there is a rescue group or shelter in your area you may want to ask about young adult cats with easygoing personalities - there may even be a rescue that would allow you to take a cat home for a trial period. If you do end up adopting a new cat be sure to introduce them to each other very slowly, make sure they have separate resources at first (food, water, resting areas and litter pans) and consider a pheromone spray like Feliway to reduce stress.

I would suggest neutering him. It may not solve the issue fully but may make him less prone to want to wander off. The other tip is time. Be patient, he may get more cozy in time.
