My 2-year-old cat is 25lbs and still growing. What breed gets so big?

What a handsome cat! Most Maine Coon cats are 16-20 lbs without being overweight. I’ve seen a few larger but they are not as common. Usually they will be full grown around a year old but may mature and fill out until they are two years old. Wow....he is totally adorable!!! He is larger than the average 6 month old kitten. At this age, the average kitten is usually 4-6 pounds. He does appear to have a long body and also some longer hair. These are characteristics of Maine Coone. It is certainly possible that he has Maine Coone genes...or he is just a very big domestic cat. Sometimes kittens are born as dwarf and will not grow much. This is a rare congenital disorder. More often kittens that do not thrive or grow normally have a congenital heart defect or a liver shunt. I suggest you have Foxy examined by a vet to rule out the latter problems, as there will be healt implications for her future life. If Silver is almost three years old now, she should be completely finished growing - so I would not expect her to get any bigger. Some cats do stay very petite in size; this isn't necessarily abnormal, as long as she seems healthy otherwise. If she is eating and drinking fine, active, and not overly skinny then I wouldn't worry - she may just be a small kitty :)

A purebred Maine coon should eat kitten food until they are 15 months old so Goliath should probably eat kitten food till he is about 12 or 13 months old. Since he is a mix, he is not likely to get as big or grow as much as a purebred Maine coon. When he is a year old, have him examined by his veterinarian who may be able to get a good idea of how much more growth you should expect from him or if he appears to be done growing. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At over 1.5 years old it is normal to stop growing. Most cats have reached their skeletal size before 1 year of age. Genetics play in to how skeletally big an animal or person will be. Either Wilkie has some small relatives are he is just abnormally small from a mutation. There is nothing you can do and if he is healthy otherwise enjoy is cuteness and him looking forever young! Have a great day!

Your cat's sudden growth spurt probably has less to do with the introduction of the male cat and more to do with the levels of growth hormone in her system. Feline growth hormone will be increased in cats around the age of maturity (2-4 years). Some diseases including diabetes melitus and acromegaly are also associated with higher levels of FGH. Finally, stress can also result in increased growth hormone levels. If the introduction of the male has caused Deesa to be extremely stressed, then it could be possible that the growth spurt is due to his introduction to the house.
