My 2-year-old cat is tiny like a kitten. Is this normal? Will she grow?

Sometimes kittens are born as dwarf and will not grow much. This is a rare congenital disorder. More often kittens that do not thrive or grow normally have a congenital heart defect or a liver shunt. I suggest you have Foxy examined by a vet to rule out the latter problems, as there will be healt implications for her future life. Cats stop growing by 11-12 months of age in general. It is likely Ella is done growing. Some cats are small but I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian with some bloodwork to make sure everything is normal. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At over 1.5 years old it is normal to stop growing. Most cats have reached their skeletal size before 1 year of age. Genetics play in to how skeletally big an animal or person will be. Either Wilkie has some small relatives are he is just abnormally small from a mutation. There is nothing you can do and if he is healthy otherwise enjoy is cuteness and him looking forever young! Have a great day!

Kameo is adorable! She may not get much bigger if she has not grown much in the past 6 months. This is not normal per se for cats, but may be common for runts of the litter. Nutrition may help with this as well as ruling out any underlying medical conditions heart, liver, kidney issues through a throrough physical examination by a veterinarian + screening bloodwork. A top rated food that I recommend for a cat of this age is Royal Canin Kitten dry and wet food. It is highly palatable (most cats love the taste) and provides better nutrition than many other commercially available brands of cat food. I recommend transitioning gradually over the course of a week into the Royal Canin Kitten diet (1st 2 days 75% old food 25% new, 2nd 2 days 50%/50% old/new and last 2-3 days 25% old/75% new). You will likely notice an improvement in Kameo's coat and skin health on the Royal canin diet. If she does not grow significantly by the time she is a year of age....continue her on the Royal canin adult cat food, maintain her at a good body condition score (not too far or too thin), and give her lots of love! Kittens like people come in all shapes and sizes!

She doesn't seem very small to me from looking at the pictures, but pictures can be misleading, so I'd have to see her in-person to really tell. Stunted growth essentially happens for four different reasons: 1) Hormone deficiency - would be a very small cat (almost kitten-sized). 2) Genetics 3) Disease - such a liver shunt, or high parasite load 4) Lack of proper nutrition at a young age In the pictures, Diamond Nilo appears to be well proportioned, has a good coat and is generally not sickly appearing. This information actually goes a long way to saying that it's likely just genetics -- she is just a smaller breed. If she had any of the other conditions, then it would be more obvious by now, because she would have deformities, or continually showing signs of illness. Without knowing her whole history, it's difficult to know how healthy she is, but if you are not noticing any other problems with her, then I would not worry about getting bad news at the vet's office. Poor Shadow! This could just be her normal. Cats can actually have multiple dads from the same litter so it is possible that her dad was a more petite cat. There is also the possibility that she has a genetic issue that prevents her from growing normally like poor absorption of nutrients or a liver shunt. If she is completely normal, then I wouldn’t be overly concerned. If you are concerned or if she doesn’t act like the others, then I would talk to your vet. Your vet can do some blood work, fecal and possibly even X-rays, an ultrasound and specific GI bloodwork if needed to see what could be causing the poor growth. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She could have a congenital issue like dwarfism or be a certain breed like a munchkin. There are genetic endocrine issues like hypothyroidism that can stunt growth but that is exceeding rare. It’s hard to say if it will affect her life span without knowing if her stunted growth is from a medical condition. Next time you take her to the Vet have them look in to it. I wish you the best!
