Why is my 6-month-old kitten so big? Is he a Maine Coon mix?

What a handsome cat! Most Maine Coon cats are 16-20 lbs without being overweight. I’ve seen a few larger but they are not as common. Usually they will be full grown around a year old but may mature and fill out until they are two years old. No you should not be concerned his weight is absolutely fine even for a main coon, do not forget your vet cannot know for sure if he is a pure breed just by his look, a DNA test is needed to confirm that.

A purebred Maine coon should eat kitten food until they are 15 months old so Goliath should probably eat kitten food till he is about 12 or 13 months old. Since he is a mix, he is not likely to get as big or grow as much as a purebred Maine coon. When he is a year old, have him examined by his veterinarian who may be able to get a good idea of how much more growth you should expect from him or if he appears to be done growing. Since Maine Coon cats can have a genetic disposition for a heart condition called HCM, I would take Count to a veterinarian for an exam and possible referral to a cardiologist. HCM or another heritable disease can inhibit growth.

Hi! Mars is super cute! As I am sure you are aware Maine Coon's are in general large cats. With that said, large does not equate overweight. It's difficult to assess ideal body condition from simply looking, you will need to put your hands on Mars. Ideally, what you want is to be able to see a bit of a wait taper behind his rib cage. You want to be able feel his ribs through a layer of fat. You shouldn't be able to count the ribs and they should also not be buried under so many layers of fat that you cannot feel them at all. Tigger is a very handsome boy! Based on his appearance and his weight of 9 pounds, I would say that he is not a purebred Maine Coon. Maine Coons are quite large cats and have a shaggy coat. Tigger looks like he has a short coat, which is not characteristic of a Maine Coon. Based on the pictures you have provided, he looks like a domestic shorthair to me. I cannot tell you when his exact birthday is. All I can tell you is that most kittens we guess age by their weight. So, at 2 pounds they are about 2 months old. At 3 pounds, about 3 months old. So I would guess at about 2.6 pounds he should be about 11 weeks or so. He sounds normal.
