When to switch my growing Maine Coon mix kitten to adult cat food?

What a handsome cat! Most Maine Coon cats are 16-20 lbs without being overweight. I’ve seen a few larger but they are not as common. Usually they will be full grown around a year old but may mature and fill out until they are two years old. I recommend switching to adult right at 1 year of age, but if you wanted to make the transition now I think that would be fine. If she seems to be doing well on her current food it's a good idea to stick with the same brand.

Kittens until they are the age of 12 months should be fed a kitten food to support their growth needs. Each bag of food has a different daily allotment, so feed her according the instructions on her bag of food. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canid, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I hope this helps.

Wow....he is totally adorable!!! He is larger than the average 6 month old kitten. At this age, the average kitten is usually 4-6 pounds. He does appear to have a long body and also some longer hair. These are characteristics of Maine Coone. It is certainly possible that he has Maine Coone genes...or he is just a very big domestic cat. Since Maine Coon cats can have a genetic disposition for a heart condition called HCM, I would take Count to a veterinarian for an exam and possible referral to a cardiologist. HCM or another heritable disease can inhibit growth.

I have a Ragdoll as well! They are my favorite breed of cats. I switched my Ragdoll from kitten food to adult food when he was a year old, and he was just fine. He's a massive boy, 17 pounds. It's fine to make the switch at a year. You can also feed Tallulah a breed specific food. Royal Canin has a Ragdoll formulated food.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Kittens should be on kitten food primarily until they are 9 months to a year of age. There are differences in the nutritional content of these foods. The kitten formula has higher protein, calcium, vitamin D and E to help support health growth then the Savor does. I would recommend your kitten continues to eat the kitten formula until 9 months to a year old and then you can transition him back to the Savor or another adult formula. I hope this helps!
