Why do my kittens have white film in their eyes, and it's spreading?

A dewormer would be beneficial if the diarrhea is caused by worms, however if they also have eye discharge or third eyelids showing I would be concerned about other issues ongoing such as a respiratory infection or illness. The kittens, if they are about 2-3 months old, are also of the age where they should be getting their first set of vaccines, exams, etc. It would be best to bring them into your vet for a complete checkup, checking the stool to figure out the cause of the diarrhea, look at the eyes, and get started on a health and vaccination plan.

What you are seeing in the inside corner of Nala's eye is a normal structure called the third eyelid (or nictating membrane). However, it is not normally up as much as Nala's are in the picture. There are a few possibilities of why a third eyelid will be up more than normal. This is likely to be a due to a viral and bacterial infection of the eye, which would require immediate check up as antibiotics are immediately needed. These type of ocular infections can result in corneal damage and possibly perforations if not treated quite rapidly.

Regardless, they need to see a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as this is likely causing significant discomfort. It looks like your kitties have prolapsed third eye lids. I am assuming they are inside/outside cats and go hunting as well. A prolapse of the third eye lid can be caused by an infection with tape worm. We do not know why this happens, but most cats who have this (reversible) condition without other disease of the nervous system had a tape worm infection. Tape worm can be successfully treated with a wormer for cats containing praziquantel. If your cats show other signs of illness you should have them examined by a vet as there are other conditions that can cause this prolapse of the third eye lid.

Most likely no, your kitten will not die from green eye boogers and a raised 3rd eyelid. I recommend going to your vet who will likely prescribe a topical opthalmic antibiotic ointment or drops. He/she may also recommend a fluorescein stain of the eyes to rule out corneal scratches/ulcers. It is possible that after the infection/inflammation is resolved, the third eyelid may return to normal. Feline herpes virus infections in kittens can often lead to secondary bacterial eye infections. Viral infections can not generally be treated but lysine supplements/paste may be helpful in boosting your kitten’s immune system while being treated for a bacterial eye infection. Good luck!
