My kitten vomited bile twice in 24 hours but seems normal. What to do?

I recommend getting your cat seen by your vet or an emergency vet right away. Cats need to eat, if they go more than a few days without eating they can develop serious liver problems which can be fatal. Continuous vomiting for so many hours is very exhausting and dehydrating, so your kitten likely needs some medical intervention to get better. Your vet will do an exam, labwork, possibly x-rays, and based on these results, your vet will have a better idea what is going on and can better advise you about treatment options.

Poor Bella! It's not normal for a kitten to throw up, but you can try a home remedy first before having to take her into the vet. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. This vomiting could be caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, pancreatitis, or a foreign body. Should Bella need to see a vet, the vet can diagnose the cause of the vomiting and can treat her for it.

Vomiting is never normal but it does happen fairly often to kittens. The most common cause of vomiting is eating too much food. Some kitten are just greedy, they eat more than they need. Kittens also vomit because they ate something that they normally don't get ( eating human food, scrapes, scavenging in general). Shadow's problem should settle down by itself. You should withhold food for Shadow for 4-5 hrs and then offer very small amounts every 1-2hrs. He also should be offered only small amounts of water as drinking plenty of water will probably trigger another vomit. Some kittens may vomit because of intestinal worms or gut infections. In that case, they often develop diarrhea, become lethargic and go completely off food. If your Shadow is showing these symptoms, you should take him to your local vets for a check.

Sometimes cats will vomit first thing in the morning as their stomachs are empty and the acid and bile can irritate the gut lining and cause them to be sick. Usually this does no harm but if occurring frequently gastroprotectants can help. If it is occurring more mornings than not or the cat seems ill otherwise, I would have him checked out by a vet. Every so often would not concern me in a healthy kitten.

It's possible Luna may just have some minor GI upset, or she is going too long in between meals if this has only happened twice and she is otherwise normal and happy. Other possibilities can include something such as a hairball that is leading to vomiting. Offering a bland meal after she vomits, or increasing the number of meals she gets per day may help with anything minor. If the vomiting continues, worsens, she shows other signs of illness, or you are just very concerned about it, it is always best to schedule a veterinary visit to rule out more serious issues. Internal parasites, GI illness, metabolic diseases, etc can all potentially cause vomiting as a symptom, so a complete exam is best to rule out any more serious problems.

Poor kitty. If Bleu is throwing up consistently (more than 2 times within a 24 hr period), then yes this is cause for concern that he may be ill and in need of medical attention. Also if he is lethargic and unwilling to eat, or throwing up water, then those are also causes for concern. A vet visit is needed to do necessary testing to find out what the underlying problem is so that he gets proper treatment. However, if he only had one or two bouts of vomiting, is otherwise acting normal, and has a good appetite, then I would recommend fasting him (no food, only water) for the next 12 hrs so that you don't continue to upset his stomach. Then after that offer him small amounts of a bland diet (tuna and white rice) for the next few days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet. Common causes of vomiting in cats includes hairballs, food allergy, eating too fast, GI blockage, intestinal parasites, IBD, intestinal lymphoma, hyperthyroidism, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. You can remove her food and wait 6-12 hours to see if the vomiting stops. Then only give her small amounts of her food. If the vomiting continues tomorrow, Mochi should get checked out by her vet.
