My kitten is bleeding from her vagina. Is this normal or an emergency?

Why is my newborn kitten bleeding from her vagina? Shes about two weeks old though were unsure as she was a stray. She receives the milk replacer formula, sleeps well through the night, poops and pees fine. Very active and feisty. However today i noticed blood coming from her vagina. Is that normal for such a young cat or should i take her to the vet? I also have two year old male cat but never goes near her and wasnt home at the time she began bleeding. Bleeding is minor but still concerned.

This is not normal and could be a sign of urinary issues or trauma. If she has very recently been with the mother then neonatal isoerythrolysis would be another possibility but if you have had her more than a few days this would not be a possibility. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her to determine what might be going on.

    A very small amount of blood tinged discharge can be seen during a heat cycle. If there is a larger volume of blood it could be a uterine infection. Either way the hormones could be making her want to care for the kittens but they shouldn’t cause bleeding. If you’re not planning to breed her you may want to consider having her spayed.

Blood is not normally seen in the birthing process and usually indicates that there is a complication. While it's possible that she only has one kitten, it's also possible that she has more inside. I recommend taking her to the vet for an evaluation as soon as possible. They can keep things from getting worse and check for any other kittens. I hope that helps and all is well with Baby.

If he is eating, acting normal, not vomiting and does not have more bleeding, then he can be seen Monday. Otherwise, he will need to see an emergency veterinarian this weekend. The bleeding can be the result of intestinal parasites, an anal gland problem, a wound near his anus or having passed a firm dry bowel movement. You should check his litterbox for any diarrhea or hard stool. I hope this information helps!

A small amount of reddish/brown discharge is normal but frank red blood may indicate internal bleeding. Check her gums to make sure she isn't pale - indicating anemia. The blood may indicate postpartum hemorrhage, which is an emergency, and she should be assessed by a veterinarian right away. Retained placenta/kittens would appear as discolored/odorous discharge, fever, and poor doing of the mother. Either way, I would highly recommend she be examined by a vet.

You can see some bleeding after giving birth, that is normal, but without seeing her in person, I can't say if it's normal or not for sure I'd be concerned she may have more kittens yet to be born. Have her seen by a vet immediately. As for the milk, yes it's normal to still have milk there.

Vaginal bleeding in a non-cycling female is considered abnormal. If your cat is acting fine otherwise and does not appear to be in distress, this may be something that can wait until tomorrow. However, if you feel the vaginal bleeding is excessive (versus just a red discharge) enough to where blood loss is a true consideration, this is not something that should wait until morning. Poor kitten! I think you're in the right for trying to get in sooner to have her checked out by your vet. If she is bleeding a lot or is having severe diarrhea or vomiting, then seeking out care from another vet or even an emergency clinic may be a good idea. Keeping her bottom clean and dry can help, and feeding a bland meal of some boiled chicken may help as well until you can be seen.
