My kitten has bloody diarrhea and is hiding. Is it an emergency?

Small specks of red blood during a bout of diarrhea is not unusual as the delicate lining of the back passage can become damaged from straining. As long as he is bright and alert, eating and drinking it would be ok to leave him but if any lethargy, weakness or vomiting occurs he should be seen urgently by your vet. Be sure he is up to date with deworming medication as intestinal worms are a common cause of diarrhea in young kittens

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nami! At 6 weeks old Nami should be on 100% kitten food. She no longer needs formula. It could be her diet or the formula causing the diarrhea. Other causes of diarrhea in a kitten are: intestinal parasites and viral or bacterial infections. The blood indicates inflammation in the colon and the blood tends to show up with severe diarrhea or diarrhea occurring for several days. If Nami is eating and no longer vomiting I would eliminate the formula and the food you think upset her stomach. If the diarrhea isn't better in 2 days then bring a stool sample and have her seen by a Vet. If she won't eat or vomits again she needs to be seen. I wish Nami the best!

Poor kitties. It sounds like these kitties likely have an intestinal bug causing their symptoms. I would visit your vet to have their stools tested first to determine what bug is present, and then they can get prescribed the appropriate dewormer. They may also need to do a short course of antibiotics to get the gut flora back to normal, especially if you are seeing them straining (colitis). I hope that your little ones feel better soon! I'm quite concerned that she has diarrhea with bright red blood in it and is very lethargic. Based on this, I think she should see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. If he wasn't weaned and is now eating a kitten food, that could be causing the bloody diarrhea. I agree, it does look like his anus is protruding a bit. Given that he's eating and drinking and otherwise acting normally, it's fine to wait until the morning to wait to take him into a vet. He should see one first thing in the morning to get treated. Tonight, keep feeding him and giving him water, and keep him warm and comfortable. I hope this helps!

Oh my goodness, Gerdou is absolutely beautiful! Yes, it is typically recommended to not feed a cat for a period of time when they are suffering from diarrhea. It allows their stomach to settle, and then a bland diet is introduced after this period of starving. For a 56 day old kitten, I wouldn't withhold food for more than 12 hours. After this time period, feed Gerdou a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. Hopefully she feels better soon, but have her seen by the vet again if the diarrhea continues on the bland diet.

It's now a medical emergency that Bunty hasn't eaten in 18 hours. If she goes much longer without eating, she will develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. She is quite sick and cannot be treated at home. Please take her into a vet immediately. Best of luck.
