My kitten has stomach upset from wet food. What brands are best?

Great question! I recommend Hill's Science Diet Healthy Cuisine Kitten Roasted Chicken & Rice Medley Canned Cat Food. It's really good for a sensitive tummy but is still formulated for kittens. I hope this helps!

Given that she gets loose stools with even a little Royal Canin, I would try a different food instead. Hill Science diet is great, as well as Purina ProPlan and Iams. If any of them give her loose stools even with switching slowly, then I would stick with the Whiskas only.

I am a fan of Royal Canin, so yes I would recommend switching your new kittens to all Royal Canin. It's a very high quality food, and because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff, you are assured the food is balanced to meet your kittens's nutritional needs. I would feed them according to the instructions on the bag. It could be one of your kittens has intestinal worms, causing its stool to be a little wet. These are common in kittens. Poor guy. I wouldn't decrease his food for fear of malnutrition, but you should try feeding him an easily digestible bland diet until his GI flora is back to normal. Excessive gas is an indication of indigestion. Try Purina EN or have your vet prescribe Royal Canin GI low fat or Hill's Science Diet. An easily digestible food should help both the stool and the gas. You can also ask your vet for prescription cream to help with some topical relief back there. This last decade has brought an incredible amount of new products to the shelves and I know it must be daunting and very confusing to consumers. Unfortunately, most information about these foods comes from the pet store employee or an equally unqualified source on the internet. It's very wise of you to ask an expert. The truth about most of these foods is that their claims usually amount to nothing more than that of a fad diet (i.e. paleo or atkins) and are not supported by sufficient evidence (even though they will make it sound like it is). As scientifically trained practitioners, us vets prefer to offer evidenced based treatment and the same goes for feeding suggestions. Wet food will encourage water intake and may make the stools more soft, but does not cause diarrhea. Lightly cooked, grain-free, natural, etc. are really just marketing gimmicks meant to increase sales. They mean essentially nothing and normally do not have any good evidence to back their claims. The most important thing on that bag is a tiny bit of writing under the guaranteed analysis called the AAFCO statement. This statement tells you what actual research went into making the product. More importantly, they will have ensured the necessary amino acids are in the correct quantity. I know the answer may still be somewhat vague, but if you stick to the basic principles of choosing the right food, then you should be successful in feeding a good and nutritious food to your cats. Whiskas is considered a lower-quality brand, but is still nutritionally complete to give. If you're looking for a higher-end food, looking to brands that are readily available at pet stores such as Science Diet or Royal Canin are good choices. These brands offer many different varieties so you can better tailor the food to Lucy's individual needs, and some even have foods specific to certain breeds/sizes of cat. Both also carry a variety of wet and dry foods if you want to feed both, however that isn't always necessary. Feeding twice a day (once in the morning and once at night) as you are currently doing should be fine. If she seems extra hungry or is losing weight, smaller more frequent meals may also help. Your vet can also help you monitor Lucy's weight over time with the new food if you're curious to see how her weight or body condition changes.

Hill's Science Diet and Purina are also good food. I would try a sensitive stomach formula in Royal Canin first then switch brands. Be sure to keep in mind that a food allergy is just once cause of vomiting. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, hair balls, foreign body, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion or inflammatory bowel disease.
