Why does my kitten have frequent stinky stools after diet changes?

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 5 months and 13 days old | 6 lbs

We got a 5m old Siamese (shelter) 2 weeks ago who tested neg. for parasites, although found stray. She got the HEB Ranch kitten dry food for 2days she was there. But gave us the HEB ADULT sample to take home. She didn’t use the litterbox for 10hours, then had a stinky solid stool. We started feeding the HEB Kitten one for a week but she had ~ 6-8 soft and solid stinky stools/day, changed to the adult with no change.dewormed again yesterday but seems fine.She drinks and eats a lot. Is it normal?

Hello, thank you for your question about Ivy.

It is possible that the changes in the stools you have noticed could be due to the frequent diet changes. Some cats/especially kittens are more sensitive to rapid changes in diets. You could try transitioning her to a bland diet for the next few days - this can include boiled chicken/hamburger and white rice. Some cats are more reluctant to eat this and if that is the case there are commercially available diets that are easy on the GI tract.

I would recommend continuing to monitor the diarrhea for the next 24 hours. If it continues with no improvement it is possible that there may be something else going on. If it continues I would recommend contacting your veterinarian to discuss adding in an anti-diarrheal medication.

Congrats on your new kitten! Since Stella was on Hill's before, it's not likely the cause of her soft stools. Intestinal parasites are common in young kittens, and that could be a cause of her soft stool. Check with the shelter to see if she has recently received a deworming treatment, and if she has not, I would give her one. If she is up to date on her deworming treatments, keep an eye on her stools and if they become diarrhea, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Poor kitty. Sudden food changes can certainly cause a pet to have loose stool. Since you have dewormed then you can try giving Milo a bland diet of boiled plain chicken, tuna, or ground turkey and white rice to ease the stomach. You can also give probiotics --> https://www.chewy.com/purina-pro-plan-veterinary-diets/dp/49853 If this does not improve the stools within 3-4 days, then its best to get Milo seen by your vet for further testing (i.e. fecal exam) and treatment (i.e. antibiotics, etc). Not all dewormers will treat for all potential intestinal parasites. I hope that your furry friend Milo resolves his loose stools soon! Best wishes and take care.

My kitten has frequent runny, smelly poop but seems healthy. Why?

Koko may have intestinal parasites still or colitis. She may have some food indiscretion or sensitivity. I suggest you take a fresh stool sample to your vet for a fecal exam. If she has parasites, she will need to be wormed/receive medication against the type of parasites present, again. sometimes worming has to be repeated. If she has a food indiscretion you will have to change her diet. Best to take her for a recheck to your veterinarian and discuss diet options with him.

Why is my active kitten's diarrhea changing colors? Is he okay?

These type of feces are definitively not normal. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. My kitten has watery diarrhea after a food switch. What to do?

Diarrhea in kittens can be due to a variety of reasons, including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, a virus or another underlying issue. I would recommend Oreo be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her diarrhea, have any necessary testing done (fecal analysis, etc) and start any treatment (dewormer, antidiarrheal, probiotic) that she may need to help resolve it.
