Is it safe for my 8-week-old kitten to eat small pieces of bread?

Cats are carnivores, so they can utilize protein and fat better than any carbohydrates. While rice and bread is not toxic for them, they will be more likely to gain weight if they eat too many carbohydrates, so it is best to limit them to small treats only if at all. Be sure the read the label on the cheese chips to make sure there isn't any onion or garlic powder in them which can be toxic for cats. Limit table food as much as possible. It is fine to give a tiny bit as a treat or reward occasionally as long as it does not contain onion or garlic. Cat specific treats can be used as rewards for positive behavior and during play. Again, limit quantities to avoid obesity.

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Small bits of cooked chicken can be a good treat for a cat, but I would stay away from the other foods you mentioned. None of those foods are dangerous, but cheese and milk can cause diarrhea and GI upset, and crackers & bread are not very nutritious for cats. Better to stick with little bits of cooked meat. The main source of nutrition for your kittens should be kitten food, but a small amount of beef is unlikely to cause any harm. If you note any vomiting or diarrhea after offering beef then I wouldn't offer any in the future. Cute kittens! Good luck with them!

By 8 weeks old, you can absolutely start to give your kitten dry food. If they are accustomed to eating wet food, consider making the transition gradually by mixing the wet and dry foods together over 5-7 days. While it would not necessarily be harmful to eat small amounts of an adult cat food, it would be best to exclusively feed kitten food for the first year of life since these foods are balanced for growth. I would not recommend giving it cat milk at 8 weeks of age. Sometimes the cat milk can cause diarrhea in older kittens. I would recommend a dry or wet kitten food for a 8 week old kitten. This is the best food option at this age.

I highly recommend a balanced puppy food (Purina puppy chow for example) as her main source of nutrition while she transitions from nursing and onwards. She can have small pieces of chicken as treats or for training.
