What can my 8-week-old kitten eat? Dry food, adult food, or treats?

If the bag says it is ok, then it probably is. 8 week old kittens should be able to digest food as well as an adult, just make sure that 90% of their diet comes from a good quality kitten food so they get the proper nutrition and vitamins for their growing bodies!

A kitten at 8 weeks old is able to eat dry food just fine. If you want to put a little water or tuna juice on it to soften it you can but it is likely not necessary. If she will not eat the dry food you can always give her canned food. DO NOT mix it with cow's milk - that milk is not good for cats. If you must use milk you need to use kitten milk replacer. I would not recommend giving it cat milk at 8 weeks of age. Sometimes the cat milk can cause diarrhea in older kittens. I would recommend a dry or wet kitten food for a 8 week old kitten. This is the best food option at this age.

Kittens do the majority of their growth in the first five to six months of life but continue to grow until they are around one year old. During this time of rapid growth and maturation of their bones, it is very important to choose a complete and balanced diet with the appropriate levels of nutrients. Diets formulated for growth include those labeled for kittens or “all life stages.” Canned foods promote increased water consumption in cats, and feeding dry food exclusively or in combination with canned is also acceptable. Offering a kitten with a variety of textures early in life can be helpful in minimizing the chance of having a picky eater. Regardless of diet selection, always make diet changes gradually by mixing the old and new foods together over five to seven days and make sure to carefully measure the appropriate portions of your cat’s food. Abrupt changes have a greater likelihood of resulting in vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Cats are carnivores, and canned, pate-type wet food is the closest to what they would get in the wild. Do this for a week, then offer 1/2-1/2 new/old food in the second bowl for a week. Change to 3/4 new-1/4 old for a week and gradually stop putting old food in the first bowl. By the end of the month she should be transitioned to the new food with a minimum of digestive upset.

Absolutely! Dry food only diets are perfectly fine for kittens, provided that you are offering a diet formulated for growth, like a kitten or all life stage diet. Oliver can be transitioned to an adult cat food when he is 1 year old. Any time you change the food, be sure to do so gradually by mixing the old and new foods together for 5-7 days.

Hi there. I would recommend feeding her a high quality kitten food until she is 9 months old. You can feed her canned food and dry food.
