My kitten puked rope after spay surgery. Should I be worried?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 months and 14 days old

My female kitten was fixed and microchipped yesterday. This morning, I gave her food for the first time and she started puking soon after. Along with the food she puked up, she puked up what looks to be a small red coil of rope. I don't think I have anything like this in my house, so I'm worried she puked up something from the surgery, but I am not sure what. Should I be worried? She does not appear to be in distress.

I'm sorry Franziska isn't doing well! When a cat is spayed, there is no entry into the stomach or GI tract, so it would be impossible for this object to be something from her spay surgery. In addition, rope isn't used in a spay surgery. It sounds like you aren't sure if you have something like this in your home, so it is possibility that she could have eaten it at your house previously or maybe it was something she found outside if she is allowed outside. If she appears ok for now, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. I recommend withholding food for 8-12 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I am not quite sure what she may have thrown up in the picture. It looks like it could be rice or even intestinal parasites. Since she is still vomiting parts of the plastic bag, I would be concerned that there may have been something missed during surgery. If she shredded the bag, there could be tiny pieces in her stomach and/or small intestines that would never be felt when look at these organs during exploratory surgery. She may need additional treatment to help these pass, including IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, enemas, or medications to help stimulate her intestines to move.

My cat ate another cat's vomit, possibly plastic. Is she okay?

Oh no it's not good that Kitty ate that vomit! At most, I would expect that eating this vomit could cause some GI upset, causing her to vomit and/or have diarrhea. It's good that it doesn't look like she has eaten the plastic bag, and if she ate the bag, I would be concerned that the bag could cause a foreign body obstruction. Keep an eye on her for now, and if you see any vomiting or diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps her. My cat threw up hair ties and keeps vomiting. Should I worry?

Yes you always have to be worried with potential foreign body ingestions. Hair ties are pretty small so the chance that they can cause blockages are slim, but they can still get stuck in the intestines and cause problems There are two possibilities at this point: 1) There is another hair tie still in there ( this will take some deductive reasoning in your part) that is stuck. 2) All hair ties have been expelled and your pet now just has an upset stomach due to dietary indiscretion. The odds are good because it is very small and had no sharp edges. With small foreign bodies it is recommended feed the pet a bulking agent like 1/2-1 loaf of bread or canned food that will help bind any additional objects within the GI tract and potentially help expel them out of the system. My cat ate string and vomited. Should I worry about obstruction?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could have been due to a partial obstruction. If she vomited all the obstructing material (string) then she may be ok. However, if she continues to vomit, this may be due to an obstruction and further therapy may be needed. If the issue continues, I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Best of luck!

My dog vomited a week after spay surgery. Should I be concerned?

The wound looks quite healthy but there is a small amount of not completely clear discharge coming out from it. I cannot see any skin sutures as well. I would recommend an immediate check up to determine if skin sutures were removed accidentally (by licking it). Antibiotics (local) may be needed. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I am sorry to hear that Stella is not feeling well. It is common for animals to experience nausea post-surgery, especially if it is an abdominal surgery or strong pain medications are used. If you are giving any medications, I would stop for 24 hours and notify the veterinarian that you are stopping the medications to see if Stella improves. If you are giving something such as Buprenex for post operative pain control, this particular drug can cause nausea, vomiting, shaking, lethargy, etc. If she is not improved within 24 hours, then I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My cat threw up ribbon, now bile but acts normal. Should I worry?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tatum! The vomiting could be from residual irritation from the ribbon or there could be more ribbon that is causing an obstruction. It is also possible it is completely unrelated to the ribbon in general: intestinal parasites, hair ball, ate something else gross (plant, etc), pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new food/treat/table food. You can continue to watch him but if he continues to vomit or stops eating that is an emergency and he needs to see a vet for an exam and an X-ray to check for a blockage. I wish you the best!
