My cat is throwing up and lethargic after spay. What should I do?

Hi and thanks for posting. I am sorry to hear Charlie is not feeling well. The hard spot on the incision site may be a tissue reaction to the suture material used and is not a cause for concern as it will go away on its own. However, the lethargy does sound concerning to me. There are a variety of causes for lethargy in cats and it is hard to say what exactly the issue with Charlie is without examining her first. I would without food from her tonight (she can have water) and keep her warm overnight. Tomorrow, if she is still lethargic and not herself, please take her into see her veterinarian. While you can see a decrease in appetite and potentially drinking after a spay, her appetite should have been back to normal or close to normal by now. It's very serious she hasn't eaten or drank in 48 hours, and that suggests something is quite wrong. I would take her into a vet immediately, as she may have a post-surgical complication. Great to hear you are choosing to spay and neuter your kitties! Some cats definitely do recover more quickly than others. This could depend on the choice of anesthetic, recovery time, other health issues, and nutrition. 15 hours is definitely a pretty long time and I would have expected a almost full recovery from any anesthetic at that point. Extremely lethargy and unsteadiness could be an indication of a post-op complication, infection, or something different entirely. If Tortilla appears to be stable to you, this isn't necessarily an emergency. However, if you think she is deteriorating, you may want to go ahead and get the emergency hospital on alert to tell them you might be coming in at some point. I would go ahead and check her gums for good color (pinkish and moist) and try to obtain a rectal temperature (over 102.5-103.0 would be considered a fever). If any of these are troubling to you, get her checked out some time soon. Also, I would flip her over and take a good look at her incision to see if it looks inflammed, red, or painful. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If she was bright and happy, and is now lethargic again, one concern is an infection within the abdomen. This is rare after a spay but can happen as a potential complication of any abdominal surgery. I recommend you have Molly back to your vet ASAP, or to an emergency clinic if your vet is closed. They will check her abdomen with an ultrasound to see if any free fluid is present, and will test this fluid if present. They might also do a blood test to look at her white and red blood cell levels. It might just be that Molly needs more pain medications, however we must rule out a 'peritonitis' (infection in the abdominal cavity) first. Best of luck with Molly, I hope she feels better soon!

I'm not sure how long ago Xenon was spayed, and while you would expect some lethargy and decreased appetite the first 24-48 hours after surgery, the cat should start to perk up after that time. If it's been 48 hours since her surgery and she is acting this way, I'd take her into a vet now to get checked out. Best of luck.

After 3 days, the recovery from anesthesia should be gone and she should be feeling like her old self and normal. For her to not have an appetite at this point is concerning something else is going on and it is not part of the surgery recovery. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a check up. They can take her temperature and make sure she is not dehydrated. They can see if there is an infection or a virus that is making her feel bad. Continue to do broth or you can try tuna or the juice to encourage her to keep fluids in until you get her seen. I would also try to keep the other cats away from her so she can rest.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mochi! She is adorable! I have a few questions, is Mochi on any medications? If so, what are they. Medications can make cats vomit. Or the medications she was given while at the Vet hospital. I recommend stopping any oral medications you are giving and call the Veterinarian in charge of Mochi's care. If she is not on any medication I still think you should call to discuss if any medication she was given the end of Sept could be upsetting her stomach. If this isn't mediated related I wouldn't allow too many days tog o by before having her rechecked. Other causes of vomiting are: viral or bacterial infections, pancreatitis, intestinal inflammation, foreign body ingestion (some thing is stuck), food allergy or intolerance, ate something that is disagreeing with her.
