My dog vomited a week after spay surgery. Should I be concerned?

Hi and thanks for getting in touch with us! The incision seems relatively healthy, with a small amount of dry discharge. Antibiotics will prevent any infection. She should be checked only if the discharge is increasing and she seems uncomfortable and lethargic. She should be absolutely kept indoors and rested as much as possible. A cone/buster collar should be kept on at all times.

Without seeing the incision I cannot say if the incision is infected. You can always upload up to 3 pictures when submitting a question. I would recommend a veterinarian. That looks like it's healing pretty well at this stage. Keep an eye on it for any redness, bleeding, seeping, swelling or her feeling sick or lethargic. Keep her confined, going outside only on a leash and only long enough to go potty for another week or so until she heals completely.

Hi ! From this side of the wound I don’t see any oozing or have any concerns regarding a possible infection. I would keep the collar on for another 3-4 days and have it reassessed at your vets if you are worried.

Hi ! If Holly is well in herself, eating bright passing normal feaces and urine, I would not worry. A little bit of vaginal discharge is expected folllowing the surgery and should gradually decrease and disappear. It can take sometimes a couple of weeks for it to settle completely. It is not uncommon for pets to feel nauseous after surgery. If she is vomiting water, I would not give her food or water overnight. If she continues vomiting she should be seen by a veterinarian to figure out if there is something else going on that could be unrelated to the surgery. As long as she doesn't vomit overnight, you can start offering a small amount of water. If she holds that down, you can then give her a small amount of her regular food.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. I do recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. Her incision appears to be healing well. I do not see redness, swelling or discharge draining out. However, pictures can be deceiving. I am more worried that she is not eating. The diarrhea needs to be addressed as well. The veterinarian will examine her and take her temperature. A fever, for example, can indicate an infection. If you stopped her medications, which is reasonable given the diarrhea, she may be very painful now though. This too can affect appetite. The veterinarian will guide you on any testing or treatment options. In the meantime, keep her quiet, encourage her to drink so she doesn't become dehydrated and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs.
