My kitten isn't cleaning after pooping. Should I clean him, and is it safe?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 22 days old | 8.3 lbs

Kitten doesnt clean his backside after pooping. When will he learn and is it okay for me to clean it for him in the meantime? Also, can infection arise if he is not cleaned?

Cats don't clean their behind after every time they poop, only if it's dirty. My own cats don't clean their behind after each time they poop, and they've never had an infection from it. He will do it when he needs to, but if it become really dirty, then yes it's ok to clean it yourself. There could be a risk of infection if it's really dirty but you can clean it before it gets to that point.
