My cat has a dirty anus and won't let me clean it. Is it serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | 3 years and 5 months old | 12 lbs

My female cat, age 4 or 5, (short hair, rescue) who we’ve owned since she was 2 months, always has a dirty anus. She doesn’t have the extra hair I’ve read about that feces clump, but it seems like dried, loose bowel movement that’s dried. She is very squirmy and won’t let us hold her to clean. What should we did? And is it a medical problem? Thank you.

If Mila has abnormal stool quality or if she is overweight then it could be a medical issue. Most cats are very clean and groom themselves frequently. However, not all cats are this way and it could be a behavioral thing. If she is overweight then she may not be able to reach to keep clean. There is a food company called Royal Canin that tends to make pets have good stool quality and you may try this diet. If she has a bad stool quality, take her to the vet to see if anything should be done. I hope this helps!
