My 3-month-old kitten has nipple lumps. Is it serious or can spaying help?

My guess is that it is just hormone related hyperplasia. The other option is mastitis - it may be just starting. I would just keep an eye on it since she is acting otherwise normal. If after a couple weeks they lumps are still present you should have her examined by your vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Cats, that have not been spayed, are very prone to developing mammary tumors. The majority of these tumors are unfortunately cancerous. A lump in such a young cat could be an infection, a small wound, an insect bite, a lymph node, or waaay less likely, a mass. If she's going to a full-service veterinarian tonight they can definitely give you a good idea of what's going on. If you're going to a vaccine clinic, they'll be more limited in what they can do but can still give you a good idea if it's something normal or concerning. Between now and then, just leave the bump alone so that doesn't get bigger from being messed with. Don't try to clean it or pop it or remove it in anyway. Good luck to you and Kitty!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is likely mammary gland hyperplasia which is benign growth of the breast tissue in cats. It can happen after the cat is spayed if they ovulated and were recently in heat before the surgery. It is secondary to hormonal influence. It should resolve on it's own. I hope this helps!

If the nipples are more pronounced, and the area around them is enlarged, and she’s acting strangely then she’s probably coming into heat. You’ll know by her overly friendly or different behavior. If not then I recommend having your veterinarian examine these to determine the reason and prescribe treatment if needed. I see what you mean about Pepper's nipple, it is a big redder around the base and more enlarged than the nipple in the third picture. What I am a bit worried about is the small lump, and due to that, yes I think it should be checked out by a vet to be safe. I don't think it's a serious issue, but I cannot say that for sure without seeing her, so having it checked out by a vet is best. Give her vet a call now to make her an appointment. Since the same lesion repeatedly fills with fluid, I would suspect a cyst of some sort. While this is not an emergent condition, your cat should be examined by a vet within the next week. Your vet will be able to draw a sample of fluid and cells from the lesion that can be evaluated microscopically, as this will help to determine the underlying cause. Until that time, do not express additional fluid because this can open the lesion up to infection.
