My kitten has mites. Can they transfer to me? Will Lysol help?

Ear mites can be transferred from cat to cat/dog etc but only rarely affect people. I would keep her out of your bed until you know she has been fully treated (including for worms etc as there is also potential for these to spread to people)

Sarcoptes mites are hard to get rid of. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. 1) You need to move out of your house or apartment for three to four days. Mites that are not on a body cannot survive for more than three days. 2) Your pets need to be treated with an Ivermectin or Dectomax injection (your vet can do this). This will kill the mites on and in your cat's skin. 3) You need to go to your doctor for an exam. he will likely prescribe an ointment, that you will have to rub all over your body, or tablets. Your doctor may have further instructions. All this should help get rid of the scabies. Be aware that even after treatment your skin and your cat's skin will itch for a week or more as the mites die off.

If indeed Felix is suffering from a fungus, then there certainly is a potential for a human to get infected, The most common fungal infections in cats are caused by microsporum and trichophyton spp. and those certainly are contagious to humans, I would not let him sleep in your bed for now and when you pet him, wash your hands with soap and water afterwards. Diligently use the ointment and do not stop using it until at least two weeks after all signs of the fungus are gone.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, cats can be carriers of fleas, lice and ring worm. Cats can not have any skin lesions and carry ring worm. People can be allergic to cats as well. If Curly is being treated for ring worm then you can get it. If her hair is growing back that doesn't mean she is cured. I would ask your human Dr to provide a diagnosis. Not all skin conditions human develop can be blamed on animals. I hope this helps and I wish you and Curly the best!

Demodex mange is not contagious so you don't have to worry about the kitten being with other animals. Sarcoptic mange on the other hand, is contagious but it sounds like she doesn't have that. I hope this helps. Best wishes!

I agree and would be very suspicious of scabies, fleas or ringworm. All of these conditions can affect humans as well. The flea will respond to a product like frontline that you can purchase over the counter. However no over-the-counter products are as effective against scabies or ringworm. I recommend to have the kittens examined by a veterinarian to determine the exact cause. This way they will all receive appropriate treatment and you may need to see your own human doctor. Scabies is often treated with a prescription called revolution or advantage multi. Ringworm is treated with a special dip and oral medication. I hope this helps.

First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc).
