Kitten limping on back leg but acting normal. What should I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 20 days old | 6 lbs

I am looking after my friends 5 month old kitten and I noticed last night she was limping on her back left leg. She's eating, playing, cleaning herself and using the litter try normally. Do you think it might just be soft tissue damage that will heal it's self? She is using the leg but very softly and when she sits she isn't putting much weight on it.

It could be soft tissue damage from
an injury causing limping but it could also be a result of an orthopedic issue. Kittens can also get viral infections like calicivirus that can cause limping.

I'd recommend keeping Binks quiet by confining her to a small area and not allowing her to run, jump, or use stairs. If she continues to limp or any other abnormal signs develop she should be examined by a veterinarian as she may need X-rays or pain medication. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for cats so you will need to get these from a veterinarian.

Causes of limping in kittens are: strain or sprain, infection, abscess, bite from another cat, less likely a broken bone in her case or even viral. If she is eating and active you can give her a day. But if she isn't better or normal by Friday I would have her seen before the weekend. I wish Bootsie the best!

I would rest them over the weekend. No running, jumping, or playing. Keep them indoors at all times if they are allowed outside, and put them each into their own rooms to keep them quiet. If they still appears painful after this time, then I would take them into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. They may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give them any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given.

Have her examined by your veterinarian today. She may have injured the foot or been bitten during her absence. Antibiotics and/or pain medication may be indicated. Do not medicate her with any OTC products as most can be toxic to cats. Restrict her activity as much as possible until she sees the doctor.

I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. My young kitten is limping with a bump on her arm. Is it broken?

If you think there is any chance Orea has a broken leg she should be seen by a veterinarian. The vet can determine how serious the injury is, the approriate treatment and also help her with pain medication. Until you can get her to the vet, keep her in a small area with food, water and litterbox, but where she can't run or jump and further injure herself. Usually a large dog crate works well to confine a kitten for a short period of time.

My kitten is limping but still eating and climbing. What's wrong?

Poor Rosie! It sounds like she's sore for some reason. If she's acting normal otherwise and able to put weight on the sore leg, it may be a minor injury like a sprain or pulled muscle that will resolve on its own. You can monitor her at home for the next 2-3 days to see if things go back to normal. If not, or if her symptoms become more severe, then it would be best to have her seen by a vet for x-rays to find out what's wrong.
