My kitten won't walk on a leash. How do I train him with a harness?

Yes. Cats can go for walks. Some cats do very well and some cats do not. Get Honey adjusted to the harness inside first, then introduce her to the outside. Cats should wear a harness. Pet stores sell harnesses and light leashed for cats. Make sure to fit it properly so she cannot escape. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

I think it's a great idea for cats who want to enjoy the outside in a safe way; I would recommend by starting to have Oreo wear a harness around the house to get her used to wearing it, then attach her leash while in the house and allow her to adjust to its weight. Finally, then I'd take her outside for an adjustment to being in the yard on it. Some cats progress in a couple weeks, and others can take a little longer. Good luck!

I recommend foods that follow WSAVA guidelines which includes Hill’s Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Iams and Eukanuba. There is some evidence that wet food may have some health benefits - many cats do best on a combo. I would recommend using mealtime to help get her used to having he harness out on. If it’s possible to put it on in stages you could slowly get her used to it. In my experience, a cat who wants to escape from something like a harness will eventually find a way. I do think that this type tends to work a little better: I also think training is very important: put the harness on for very short periods of time while offering food or a treat and gradually work your way up to longer time. If he starts to get upset with the harness training is over and you should take it off. All harness time should be fun! Once he seems comfortable you can then try adding a lead.

Remember that every pet is an individual and they will all react differently. Squeak may be more adventurous than your older cat and thus more likely to roam and get into trouble. You may try again when she is older (kittens tend to be more active than adults) so maybe wait til she is a year old (or older).
