Why is my kitten leaking urine even though he uses the litter box?

It sounds like your cat might be painful when he is urinating - the tail shaking can be seen in cat's with urinary discomfort. This is common in young adult male cats and can be related to cystitis, bladder stones or a urinary tract infection. If he seems to be going more frequently, passing less urine than normal, or if he begins urinating outside the box you should see your veterinarian right away. They may recommend checking a urine sample.

Urine can be almost odorless if it is diluted a great deal, especially at this age. This can also potentially be leakage from his reproductive tract. However if it is indeed urine, leaking of urine is never normal. I would recommend taking him to your vet if this continues to happen. He may have a congenital defect or a weakened urinary sphincter (valve that opens and closes to allow urine to exit the bladder) that is causing this. Hopefully though this is something that he will grow out of, but until then you will have to keep an eye on things and get him examined if needed. Best wishes!

I would recommend seeing the specialist. I don't know exactly if or what diagnostics your veterinarian has run but I would make sure you completely rule out a urinary tract infection with a urine culture. After this the specialist can perform an abdominal ultrasound to make sure Cham Cham doesn't have something called ectopic ureters. This is when the ureter is not attached to the proper place in the bladder. The ureter carries the urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Causes of urination outside the box can be urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, trauma to the area, or difficulty getting into the litterbox due to pain, or other reasons. It is important that you make an appointment to have Jinx seen by your veterinarian as soon as you can to help determine the cause of his behaviour and to start treatment. If you notice his straining to urinate/unable to produce urine, this is a medical emergency and she should be seen by a vet immediately. In an unneutered male cat like Jinx, it may be that he is starting to mark around the house, in which case having him neutered may help. I had this exact same thing happen to me when my kitten was young. He would get so busy playing that he would "forget" to pee and when he finally couldn't hold it anymore, he would have to run to the litterbox. I found that I would have to take my kitten to the litter box every couple of hours just to "remind" him to use it for a few weeks until he got older. I suspect it is just immaturity, but certainly if it continues to happen as he gets older, have your vet evalate a urine sample to make sure there isn't something medical going on. The other thing would be to make sure that Merlin has a litterbox readily available since upstairs can sometimes be too far for a kitten. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Hello, sorry to hear about Romana. It sounds like she may have a tail pull injury. This can happen if she caught her tail on something and she pulled it, injuring the nerves that provide control of her defecation, urination, and tail feeling/movement. I would have her evaluated by a neurologist or your veterinarian to rule out other causes for this. A bladder infection can indeed cause cats to urinate very frequently. It can leak out when the glands are full or if something scares the cat, they can express them. The anal glands normally are expressed during defecation. I would have the anal glands checked by your Vet. If he is starting to spray around the house I would have him neutered. I hope this helps and I wish you the best!
