My kitten has head trauma & won't wake up. What are its chances?

Pet's info: Cat | Bengal | Male | 0 lbs

We found a kitten that has suffered head trauma and was taken to a vet. The first vet misdiagnosed a bleed on the brain. We took the kitten to another vet and they gave antibiotics and said the bleed would go. The kitten hasn't woken up after 4 days. He does respond to pain when paw was pressed. And can swallow water. His eyes don't look normal. If the kitten survives we are looking to adopt. What are his chances of survival? Pictures attached. Please help!

Poor kitty! Unfortunately, a lot of the time when it comes to neurologic trauma time and small signs of improvement are what you are looking for. X-ray only tells us if there are fractures in the skull and are very difficult to see the full scope of the trauma as so many structures are superimposed on top of each other. The best diagnostic to give you an idea about extent of trauma and prognosis would be an MRI.

It sounds like the kitten is making some progress, but only time will really tell us how much progress he will make. He may never be completely healed and functional, so you will also have to decide how dedicated you can/willing to be for a potentially special needs kitten.

Poor little thing. The appearance of the abnormal eye is concerning. There may have been enough trauma to the eye to have caused glaucoma which can be very painful and should be addressed. I am so sorry to hear this. Based on what you are describing I would assume that the head trauma Dada sustained has caused swelling on the brain. This would account for the neurological symptoms you are seeing. Unfortunately cats with head trauma need intensive nursing care, special IV medications to help decrease the swelling, and possible oxygen therapy. My cat has a crushed skull. What are the chances of survival?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! O am very sorry this is happening! I think it depends if your cats skull was crushed or he just has head trauma. Animals can survive concussions and head trauma. The neurologic system can heal but it can be very very slow to do so. It depends on whether you have the emotional and financial means to give your cat time. I have seen animals that have been hit by a car have blood from their nose and ears. If your cat is unconscious, starts to have seizures or suffers cardiac arrest I would consider human euthanasia. I would need more details on what surgery your Vet is thinking of doing. My kitten fell and hit head. What to do for a kitten concussion?

I'm so sorry that Noah Khan hit his head! He's in the best place possible with the vet, and they can monitor him and treat him as needed. I would keep him there as long as the vets recommend to keep him, and I'm sure they are doing everything they can for him. Unfortunately all you can do is wait for updates and hope that he will be ok. Hang in there, I know it's so hard and I will be hoping as well he pulls through ok!

Kitten head trauma: How to help with feeding, drinking, and pain?

Without examining and knowing how bad/what exactly is happening with Sam, it's hard to give specific advice. If he's still able to eat and drink, keeping the bowls close to him and at a height he can reach even while laying may help him stay eating. You may need to move him to litter or bring food to him if he is having trouble with balance and walking. If the eye is shut, keeping it clean and from sticking by wiping it with a way washcloth may help until it is healed. If Sam seems in a lot of pain, or can't eat and drink at all, I would bring him back to the vet. It may mean he needs additional pain meds or meds to help with the injury, or even IV fluids or medications to help keep his strength up until he can heal some.

My cat fell from a balcony and has brain injuries. Will he recover?

Poor little Figaro. If possible referral to a vet school neurologist may be the best option to get prognosis for Figaro. However that may involve MRIs and can get expensive quickly. Neurologic injuries can take weeks to months to resolve if there is going to be any healing. Nervous tissue takes a long time to regenerate. Keep in close contact with your veterinarian, consider more advanced care if possible, and make sure that he is receiving adequate nutrition as he recovers. My kitten is stiff, head-tilting, and paralyzed after injury. Can he recover?

This is definitely a situation where I would suggest taking him to a Vet asap. Many injuries are not visible to us after a "crush injury". Your kitten could have broken bones, internal bleeding, or even swelling in the spinal cord or a break.
