Kitten with Giardia and diarrhea on Panacur. Should I give Pro-kolin?

I would recommend giving the food more time to help normalize the stool. You can also add in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora to see if this helps resolve the diarrhea as well. If there is still no improvement going in to next week, then I would contact the veterinarian you saw to discuss further options. I hope this helps! You might contact your vet to see if it is safe to increase the dose. If it is ProPectalin AntiDiarrheal Gel, this medication can be given every 8 hours. I would continue with either her current cat food or you can do boiled chicken breast and cooked white rice for a few days, but try not to change up her food too much as that can worsen diarrhea. Other causes of diarrhea in a kitten that may need diagnosis by a vet include food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, or panleukopenia.

Hi from Bangladesh! Don't worry, it may take a few more days to see improvement. You may also try a bland diet of boiled chicken, rice, and plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help firm up the stool. Using a probiotic for cats and dogs can help as well. Hope this helps!!

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. Panacur granules are not labeled for use in cats in the United States. It would be impossible to get a small enough dose measured out for a 1.5 pound kitten, therefore, it is not recommended. You can, however, use the Panacur liquid but that needs to be given once a day for 3-5 days in a row and is rather expensive. It can be purchased over the counter. Follow the dosing recommendations on the bottle. ( https://www.bestvetcare.com/panacur-oral-suspension-for-cats-and-dogs-pack-316.aspx ) It is better, and recommended, to give liquid PYRANTEL to kittens. You can also buy this over the counter. Follow dosing and frequency recommendations on the packaging but in general, the dose is 1.0mls per 10 pounds of body weight. You need to get a 1cc syringe and give 0.15mls right now as she is 1.5 pounds. You will need to increase the dosage each time as her weight will be increasing. Poor kittens! If they've been sick for three days with no improvement, and you've already dewormed them with Panacur, I would definitely recommend a vet visit at this point. They may have something more serious such as feline leukemia or panleukopenia, which your veterinarian can test for. At the very least, it sounds like they will need fluids and medication to control the vomiting and diarrhea since it isn't resolving on its own.

Be patient and try not to panic. It is normal for stool to change during treatment for any parasitic infection. You may have better success using a very digestible prescription diet like Hills I/D for a few weeks while you're dealing with the Panacur treatment, and I would recommend adding canine probiotics to the food as well to help repopulate good gut bacteria. Finish the Panacur as prescribed. Pepper's stool will normalize with time.

I recommend to call your vet. Most vets are happy to discuss the logic behind treatments. Panacur is used to get rid of certain worms and protozoal parasites like gairdia at certain doses. It is beneficial however to know if parasites are present because some of them can spread to humans or remain o source of infection in the yard. Your vet will likely not have an objection to testing Clif for worms or giardia. You will need to test him however before giving the medication.
