My dog has diarrhea. Should I give Panacur if the vet didn't test him?

Panacur (fenbendazole) treats infections by hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms in dogs. Although tapeworms are listed, Panacur is ineffective against the tapeworm commonly found in dogs and cats. Legally, we are prohibited from providing dosing information in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). This information, however, is easily found online if you don't want to wait for your veterinarian to return to the office.

Be patient and try not to panic. It is normal for stool to change during treatment for any parasitic infection. You may have better success using a very digestible prescription diet like Hills I/D for a few weeks while you're dealing with the Panacur treatment, and I would recommend adding canine probiotics to the food as well to help repopulate good gut bacteria. Finish the Panacur as prescribed. Pepper's stool will normalize with time.

Rice looking worms are most commonly tapeworm segments. Panacur does not kill tapeworm. However, it is also uncommon for tapes to cause vomiting. Since the vomiting has continued for 24 hours I would highly encourage you to have him seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Gastritis, intestinal foreign body, pancreatitis are all possibilities among other things. They will likely recommend an x-ray and possibly lab work as well. I would recommend giving the food more time to help normalize the stool. You can also add in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora to see if this helps resolve the diarrhea as well. If there is still no improvement going in to next week, then I would contact the veterinarian you saw to discuss further options. I hope this helps! Most giardia does respond to panacur. Many vets will also combine this with metronidazole if they cannot get the parasite to clear. Retest the giardia after 6 weeks from the last treatment to see if the parasite is still present. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

No, I would not recommend giving either of these. I would deworm Gunner with a good broad-spectrum dewormer like Panacur to get rid of the parasites - this will clear up the diarrhea. In the meantime, you can feed him a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days to help encourage his stools to be firmer.

Hello. Yes, you can try the Pro-kolin, but make sure you give it at least 1 hour after the Panacur so that it does not decrease the absorption of the Panacur. follow the label directions for cats & hopefully it will help to slow the diarrhea while the Panacur does its job to get rid of the Giardia.
