Can my kitten eat Fancy Feast & Meow Mix without UTI or kidney issues?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! if Lucky is on a prescription urinary diet for bladder stones, to prevent a urinary obstruction or to prevent urinary crystals it is not recommended to mix the food with anything else as it virtually makes it in effective. I would discuss other brands that may be more affordable with your Vet. Purina, Hills and Royal canin all make urinary foods. If you absolutely can not afford it then I would have him on an all canned food over the counter urinary diet and add extra water to the canned food. This will cause his urine to be more dilute. In fact, in households with one cat who has urinary problems and another who does not, I often recommend feeding the c/d to everyone anyway since I don't want the urinary cat to eat anyone else's food. (That being said, if urinary cat will stay our of Kaya's food, a kitten food IS more ideal for Kaya for the next couple months at least.) Best wishes to you and your kitties!

I wouldn't go so far as to say that is causes kidney failure but it is equivalent to us eating Taco Bell every day. So I would focus on making the necessary changes now that you know there are better foods out there. I would recommend Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Natural balance or Innova.

Regular food is much less effective in preventing recurrent urinary tract issues in cats which are very prone to repeat episodes - it is impossible to say how sensitive he is and without trying you will not know but there is a chance he could relapse on ordinary canned food. Urinary diets tend to be adjusted to maintain urine pH to prevent crystals and are restricted in minerals and use only high quality protein sources to minimise the risk of urinary tract issues as well as providing an important source of fluids compared to dry food. The very best option in affected cats is urinary canned food but in many cases a high quality, commercial canned food is sufficient - if he relapses on this you will have to source the urinary prescription food as a treatment and prevention

Lilly looks like a young adult and if you want to feed her the same urinary diet as your other cat that is absolutely fine. Otherwise I like Hill's, Royal Canin, Iams and Purina brands of foods. There is dry and wet of this diet. It is a prescription diet so you will have to get a prescription from your veterinarian. I hope this helps! We always say that it doesn't matter how good a food is if the pet won't eat it. This is especially true with cats. Your goal with a diet for a kidney patient is to avoid foods that are too high in protein, so you will want to avoid any kitten foods. Most non-prescription diets are very similar in their protein levels because they are made for the needs of an average adult cat. If Cricket was previously on a dry food, I found the best way to get my cat to eat canned food was to grind up dry food, then sprinkle it on the top of his canned food to get him eating.
