My cat has UTIs. What affordable urinary food helps healthy weight?

In mild cases, any wet food may be sufficient to keep the urine suitably dilute to prevent recurrence but i would recommend 6weeks of the specialist urinary wet food to stabilise and maximise recovery. If symptoms recur then i would recommend urinary food only thereafter

If Taffy is predisposed to urinary problems / crystals, I would recommend considering a prescription diet such as Hills C/D or Royal Canin Urinary SO. I would also consider a cranberry supplement such as Paxon, which can be found online quite easily. Increasing water intake is also key. A recirculating water fountain and feeding a canned diet can help with this. I hope this helps! Well done in researching this so well! Any dryfood would be recommended to be urinary focused as wet food in itself contributes to urine dilution and is more forgiving in this regard. I would recommend royal canin urinary moderate calorie (which comes in wet and dry) and can be very effective in weight reduction whilst promoting urinary health

Do not purchase an over the counter urinary diet, as they rarely work well. Unless your Lio has a specific allergy or sensitivity to wheat, corn, soy, or by-products, do not worry about their presence in the food. You should only be concerned about preventing urinary blockages. The normal daily amount to be fed to a 12 pound cat is 6.6 - 9.9 ounces daily. Take care.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! if Lucky is on a prescription urinary diet for bladder stones, to prevent a urinary obstruction or to prevent urinary crystals it is not recommended to mix the food with anything else as it virtually makes it in effective. I would discuss other brands that may be more affordable with your Vet. Purina, Hills and Royal canin all make urinary foods. If you absolutely can not afford it then I would have him on an all canned food over the counter urinary diet and add extra water to the canned food. This will cause his urine to be more dilute. I would recommend using the food that Lil Man's vet recommend, at least at first. Once the issue is under control, you could consider experimenting with other diets. It could be fine, but better to start with the diet that your vet is comfortable with and feels will be helpful based on their experience.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I politely disagree with your Vet. I do not recommend over the counter urinary diets for cats who have been obstructed. It is a life threatening condition and not to mention expensive issue. I wouldn't risk a non-prescription diet. They are not comparable to the prescription options. I recommend, if your cat will eat it, an all canned food prescription urinary diet like Hill's c/d, Royal canin SO or Purina UR. Increase water intake where ever possible (adding water to the canned food, water fountains, etc). If you decide to go with an over the counter option then go with the lowest ash and do all canned food. I wish you the best!
