My kitten eats paper. Is this normal behavior or a health concern?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 months and 24 days old | 2 lbs

my kitten keeps eating paper..literally any paper she can find she will tear it up and try to eat it. she's getting plenty of food, and we have probably 2 hours of playtime per day split up into intervals. could there be an underlying problem to her paper munching habits? is this normal kitten behavior?

In all likelihood, Fern's fondness for paper is likely a normal play and exploration behavior. Young kittens are still learning about their surroundings and sometimes get into trouble in the process. Obviously, try to avoid letting her eat paper when possible, but a bit here and there is unlikely to cause any significant problems. If she is eating a commercially available balanced kitten food, a nutritional deficiency is highly unlikely as a possible cause. Try to confine her when you leave the house to avoid unsupervised access to paper products, but I would expect her to grow out of this behavior. If you haven't already done so, take a stool sample to her vet to assure that intestinal parasites are not present, as this can occasionally cause animals to eat abnormal things. This can be a very common behavior in young cats! It is advisable, however, if your kitten hasn't had a vet visit yet, to have her examined to be sure there are no abnormalities or physical exam and that no intestinal parasites are present, and also to be sure you are feeding a food that is providing all her nutritional needs. You should be feeding a diet formulated for kittens. If possible, bring the food with you (the bag/package) so your vet can look and be sure it is providing adequate nutrition. You also want to be sure if your kitten is adventurous in getting into things that there isn't string or other foreign objects that she is getting into which could cause intestinal blockage.

It sounds like your kitten is being a typical 2-3 month old and exploring the world by putting things in her mouth. It is not unusual for cats and kittens to be interested in paper and many enjoy batting balls of paper around. That being said, it is possible she has an underlying medical condition that is causing her to eat inappropriate things. At her age it is important for her to be checked out by a vet to make sure she is growing and gaining weight appropriately, receives appropriate vaccines as well as de-worming medication. I would recommend taking her in for an exam with a vet to make sure she is a normal healthy girl.

Poor Ralph! If he is eating, drinking, and playing, then I would not consider this to be an emergency - it's never wrong to take him to an emergency vet if you're worried, but from what you are describing, I don't think it's necessary right now. If he had an intestinal blockage or other serious problem related to the paper he ingested, I would expect him to be vomiting, not eating, and acting lethargic. Since he's acting normal apart from his diarrhea, it sounds like he just has a mild upset stomach at this point - which is quite common in kittens who have eaten things they shouldn't :) As long as he's feeling fine, you can try feeding him a bland, easily digestible diet of plain boiled chicken or chicken-flavored baby food for the next 2-3 days to see if this helps to resolve the diarrhea now that he has pooped out the piece of paper. If this doesn't help, or if he develops any of the symptoms of an intestinal blockage that I listed above, then I would definitely recommend having him seen by a vet at that point as he may need x-rays or other testing to determine what's going on.

My kitten attacks and chews my hair. Is this normal or dangerous?

If she eats a lot of hair (and if you have long hair) there is a potential she could get a linear foreign body. You may try distraction techniques. Try enriching the environment. Try feeding her out of a food puzzle. Hide food for her to find. Provide a stand or resting place by a window so she can look outside. You may also try clicker training her for positive behavior. My kitten eats everything and is always hungry. Is this normal?

Hello. This could be a behavioral issue, or possibly a medical one. There are some intestinal disturbances that can cause extreme appetite in cats. If this is behavioral, sometimes using the anti-anxiety medication amitryptiline, can quiet some of these extreme urges. But before getting into tests & possible medications, you might try switching your cat to a canned diet. It has been shown that some cats have a longer satiety response with wet diets. You can still offer hard food, but possibly offering this in puzzles can help. Kitty Kongs & treat balls slowly release food as a cat interacts with the toy. Homemade options like milk cartons & carboard rolls with taped ends & holes punched out to retrieve treats can keep your kitties mind busy. Why does my dog eat paper? Is it a deficiency, playful, or concerning?

This is a very common problem, especially for puppies and young dogs - they just seem to enjoy ripping up and eating paper. This is not normally a sign of any kind of dietary deficiency or health problem, just something that they do for fun :) I would try and keep paper products put away out of her reach, since ingesting a large amount of paper could potentially cause some stomach upset or even an obstruction.

Why is my cat eating clothes and plants? Is it pica? How to stop it?

If she actually ingesting the non food items, this condition is indeed called feline pica. If she is sucking or nursing on them, this is an entirely different behavior. Ideally, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying medical causes. Once those have been ruled out you can focus on behavioral causes. Many times, stress or boredom can cause aberrant behavior. Consider a pheromone product such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffuser to decrease any stress or anxiety. Keep Maui engaged and distracted using a variety of toys and exercise. Restrict access to those items she eats or sucks on, stopping and correcting the behavior when observed. Be consistent and be patient.
