My kitten ate paper, has diarrhea, acts normal. Should I call vet?

Hello! My 6mo kitten has had diarrhea since Thursday. I thought it was due to me switching his food, but he just pooped out a big piece of twine-like paper from what I assume is a paper shopping bag. He's eating, drinking and playing normally. Should I take him to a 24/7 vet clinic, should I take him to the vet in the morning or should I wait to see if this clears up the problem?

Poor Ralph! If he is eating, drinking, and playing, then I would not consider this to be an emergency - it's never wrong to take him to an emergency vet if you're worried, but from what you are describing, I don't think it's necessary right now. If he had an intestinal blockage or other serious problem related to the paper he ingested, I would expect him to be vomiting, not eating, and acting lethargic. Since he's acting normal apart from his diarrhea, it sounds like he just has a mild upset stomach at this point - which is quite common in kittens who have eaten things they shouldn't :)

As long as he's feeling fine, you can try feeding him a bland, easily digestible diet of plain boiled chicken or chicken-flavored baby food for the next 2-3 days to see if this helps to resolve the diarrhea now that he has pooped out the piece of paper. If this doesn't help, or if he develops any of the symptoms of an intestinal blockage that I listed above, then I would definitely recommend having him seen by a vet at that point as he may need x-rays or other testing to determine what's going on.

I would recommend you take your cat to the vet on Monday. They can do a fecal examination to rule out intestinal parasites and possibly an X-ray to rule out a blockage/foreign body. Your vet can also give you some medication to help stop the diarrhea. If the diarrhea becomes bloody and/or your cat starts vomiting as well then I would recommend getting him in to an ER vet to make sure nothing too serious is going on.

I don't know the answer to your question because I don't know how much ribbon he ate. If he passed ribbon in the stool and that was all he ate then he is very lucky! If he passed some ribbon but there is more inside then it could be stuck and that would be an emergency. If he is eating/drinking and acting normally (no vomiting or lethargy) then I would say he is likely OK but you must understand I cannot say that for sure without examining him myself. The best advice I can give you is that if you are worried you should take him to the vet now. It is better to be safe than sorry. As for the diarrhea, it will most likely clear up on it's own within a day or so. If you want to get him a probiotic and feed that for the next week you can do that. You can use any probiotic made for cats (no human products and no dairy). They can be purchased at any pet store. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Poor kitten! I think you're in the right for trying to get in sooner to have her checked out by your vet. If she is bleeding a lot or is having severe diarrhea or vomiting, then seeking out care from another vet or even an emergency clinic may be a good idea. Keeping her bottom clean and dry can help, and feeding a bland meal of some boiled chicken may help as well until you can be seen.

My cat has diarrhea and accidents. What can I do until the vet?

Poor Shadow! I am sorry to hear that he is not feeling well. Until you can get Shadow to the vet (which I definitely recommend) you can with hold food for 12- 24hrs, then offer a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice (he may only be interested in the chicken) for about 1 - 2 days. After which you can reintroduce his regular diet. You also want to make sure that both litter boxes are extra clean. Sometimes in multi-cat households one cat decides that he/she no longer is ok using a "used" litter box (cats are wonderful, but have odd behaviors sometimes). It may be worth just keeping them separate so that Shadow has his own personal kitty bathroom until he sees the vet. As I stated earlier, I definitely recommend having Shadow seen by a vet as soon as possible because chronic diarrhea results in dehydration, which in a very small, young kitten we want to address sooner rather than later to prevent progressive potentially severe illness. It sounds as though the chili sauce caused a bit of an upset stomach for Holly. Since she is still active and eating/drinking normally, it is perfectly reasonable to wait another 24 hours before seeking veterinary attention. You can try offering her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken to try to settle her stomach over the next few days. However, if Holly stops eat and drinking, becomes lethargic, or experiences vomiting or more frequent diarrhea, she should be examined by a vet more urgently. I don't think the diarrhea has anything to do with the upper respiratory infection. I would recommend that you call the vet. They may want to test for intestinal parasites or may be concerned about a different bacteria or virus causing the diarrhea. I wouldn't change any food right now, since a sudden change may make the diarrhea worse. If he develops vomiting, decreased appetite, or lethargy, I would definitely have him checked out by the vet.

My active kitten has diarrhea. Is it diet or time to see a vet?

It could be that Ferdinand is suffering from intestinal worms. Those are very common in kittens, and if he is not up to date on his deworming treatments, I would pick one up for him. You will have to deworming him again in two weeks to make sure that all the worms are killed. If he is up to date on his deworming treatments, it could be he ate something rotten outside that upset his stomach when you weren't looking. In that case, I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 8-12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
