Why does my dog eat paper? Is it a deficiency, playful, or concerning?

Young dogs can be very oral and want to chew and play with things. Sometimes dogs develop “favorite” things to chew on. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to immediately stop him. However, frequently changing toys, keeping paper products out of his reach, maybe teaching him to only pick up something to chew or ear if given the release word. This takes time, patience, and repetition, but it can be done. I would also recommend blood work to verify that nothing else abnormal is going on, but likely it is behavioral. It would be hard to say why he is doing this. Many dogs do though and are chewers, or get in to trash for paper or Kleenex, etc. If he is doing those things, make sure he is confined to one room and keep those things out of reach. Crate train him of necessary

Obviously, try to avoid letting her eat paper when possible, but a bit here and there is unlikely to cause any significant problems. If she is eating a commercially available balanced kitten food, a nutritional deficiency is highly unlikely as a possible cause. Try to confine her when you leave the house to avoid unsupervised access to paper products, but I would expect her to grow out of this behavior. If you haven't already done so, take a stool sample to her vet to assure that intestinal parasites are not present, as this can occasionally cause animals to eat abnormal things. It's very common for puppies to enjoy tearing up paper items, boxes, books, etc. The best way to prevent this is to puppy-proof your home and keep these items put away out of Kimi's reach - just like you would for a human toddler. She will likely become less interested in doing this as she gets older. I would also make sure that you are providing plenty of appropriate chewing options for her, such as bully sticks, rawhide chews, cow or pig ears, and puzzle toys such as a Kong stuffed with peanut butter.

If he is on a high-quality, well-balanced, commercial dog food diet it is not likely to be a vitamin deficiency. In my opinion, he does this because he is a Lab and a puppy. Eating things is common for this breed. They do eat everything. They are bred for hunting and to grab things in their mouth. You need to give him things he is allowed to chew that will keep him busy. Honestly, the best thing to do is to consult with a professional dog trainer and get this problem corrected early before he gets too much older. It may due to boredom or an attempt to correct a nutritional deficiency. If she continues, she could cause a gastric or intestinal obstruction which may require emergency surgery. Review her diet with your veterinarian to confirm a balanced diet. Provide extra playtime and a variety of toys and activities to keep her distracted from eating rocks. Restrict access to areas with rocks if possible as well.

I am so sorry to hear this has happened, but I believe Maui will be fine. Most of the time they only shred the paper only ingest none or very little.
