My kitten has soft, bloody poop with mucus. What can I do at home?

PLEASE ANSWER! My 15 week old Sphynx kitten Petunia recently started to eat only hard food (taste of the wild, trout & salmon). She’s had off and on soft stools since the day i got her. She sometimes meows and growls when pooping. Today I seen she had soft runny poop with some mucus(?) and a little bit of blood I think!!! I’m freaking out and I have no money for a vet since I took our other cat a few days ago and it cost a lot. I’m so worried! I gave her some pure pumpkin to help. Please reply!

I am very sorry to hear that Petunia is experiencing this issue, I am sure it is unsettling. From what you are describing, a soft bowel movement which becomes liquid and has fresh blood in it, it sounds as though Buddy has colitis, or inflammation of the last portion of the large intestines.

There are several causes of colitis in cats, ranging from bacterial infections, parasite infestations, IBD, or ingestion of contaminated food.

Since you have only noticed one such episode I would continue to monitor Petunia at home for the time being. Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast for a few meals, then switch to a sensitive stomach diet preferable by royal canin or hills science diet as these two brands are veterinarian tested and approved. I would also suggest using a broad spectrum de-worming treatment.

If the episodes continue, if Petunia becomes depressed, passes large amounts of blood, vomits, or seems very uncomfortable take Petunia to see her vet.

My 6-month-old kitten has blood in his stool. What should I do?

Blood in the stool is very worrisome to owners and I understand that but if it is a one time occurrence I would not be overly concerned. The most common reason for this colonic irritation is internal parasites. I suggest you speak to your vet about deworming. The two common parasites to cause blood in stool is hookworms and coccidia both of which are treated with different dewormers. You should have your vet run a fecal test first to figure out if that is the underlying reason. I would also suggest you start her on a probiotic and use it for at least 2 weeks. I recommend Fortiflora but any probiotic for cats should be OK (no human probiotics). What to do for a kitten with bloody diarrhea and a protruding anus?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Prince. Congrats on your new kitten, but I'm sorry he isn't well! If he wasn't weaned and is now eating a kitten food, that could be causing the bloody diarrhea. I agree, it does look like his anus is protruding a bit. Given that he's eating and drinking and otherwise acting normally, it's fine to wait until the morning to wait to take him into a vet. He should see one first thing in the morning to get treated. Tonight, keep feeding him and giving him water, and keep him warm and comfortable. I hope this helps!

My kitten has watery, bloody poop & swollen anus. What should I do?

A sudden change in diet can lead to diarrhea, even blood diarrhea. But it can also be caused by a GI illness or intestinal worms among other causes. Feed Boz a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

If she is eating and drinking and playful with no diarrhea, then you can wait until her appointment. If she starts vomiting or having bloody diarrhea, then I would take her right away Blood after a BM can be from the diet due to straining and ruptured a blood vessel. The mucous can be from an infection or a parasite problem. You can try to increase the water intake or add canned food to help minimize the straining. you may need to change brands or ingredients of food to help

Casper needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Bloody stool can be present for many reasons including parasites, bacterial over growth, improper diet, viral infection or poisoning. Bring in a fresh sample of the feces for parasite testing. The veterinarian may recommend an antibiotic, probiotic and a bland diet. Small specks of red blood during a bout of diarrhea is not unusual as the delicate lining of the back passage can become damaged from straining. As long as he is bright and alert, eating and drinking it would be ok to leave him but if any lethargy, weakness or vomiting occurs he should be seen urgently by your vet.
