What to do for a kitten with bloody diarrhea and a protruding anus?

A sudden change in diet can lead to diarrhea, even blood diarrhea. But it can also be caused by a GI illness or intestinal worms among other causes. Feed Boz a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Oh my. Put some lubricating jelly on this prolapsed rectum right away. Multiple kitties straining to defecate and having loose stools with blood is highly suspicious for intestinal parasites or a bacterial infection. These kitties need to have their feces tested and then placed on the appropriate dewormer. Whipworms in particular are know for causing severe straining in pets. In the meantime I would suggest adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in their food daily to add fiber and help reduce some of the straining. They could also use some probiotics as well. Over the counter Culturelle is equivalent to many of the pet formulated ones such as Fortiflora. Then it’s highly advised to take the kitty with the rectal prolapse to your local ER vet right away since your regular veterinarian is closed. Poor kitten! I think you're in the right for trying to get in sooner to have her checked out by your vet. If she is bleeding a lot or is having severe diarrhea or vomiting, then seeking out care from another vet or even an emergency clinic may be a good idea. Keeping her bottom clean and dry can help, and feeding a bland meal of some boiled chicken may help as well until you can be seen.

If he is eating, acting normal, not vomiting and does not have more bleeding, then he can be seen Monday. Otherwise, he will need to see an emergency veterinarian this weekend. The bleeding can be the result of intestinal parasites, an anal gland problem, a wound near his anus or having passed a firm dry bowel movement. I'm quite concerned that she has diarrhea with bright red blood in it and is very lethargic. Based on this, I think she should see a vet now. There is nothing I would be worried about as the anus seems only mildly inflamed. Usually this is caused by softer feces/diarrhoea. I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. It looks like Ollie might be having a partial rectal prolapse, which can happen with diarrhea from things like parasites or from constipation. The blood might be related to diarrhea or if it's a small amount it could be from the rectum and from irritation. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian right away given his age - if it is a small prolapse it could get worse quickly and require surgical repair. The vet can hopefully determine the underlying cause and offer treatment.
