My kitten has bloody diarrhea and vomiting for a week. Is it serious?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nami! At 6 weeks old Nami should be on 100% kitten food. She no longer needs formula. It could be her diet or the formula causing the diarrhea. Other causes of diarrhea in a kitten are: intestinal parasites and viral or bacterial infections. The blood indicates inflammation in the colon and the blood tends to show up with severe diarrhea or diarrhea occurring for several days. If Nami is eating and no longer vomiting I would eliminate the formula and the food you think upset her stomach. If the diarrhea isn't better in 2 days then bring a stool sample and have her seen by a Vet. If she won't eat or vomits again she needs to be seen. I wish Nami the best!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Yeti is having diarrhea with what appears to be blood. This is concerning for intestinal parasites, especially in a kitten. GI parasites are not uncommon in kittens (and puppies), and can cause diarrhea +/- blood. I recommend consulting with your veterinarian to see if he/she can examine Yeti. Kittens can quickly become very dehydrated and ill since they are small. Your veterinarian may recommend a deworming medication to help treat any parasites/worms. I hope this is helpful!

Poor kitten! I think you're in the right for trying to get in sooner to have her checked out by your vet. If she is bleeding a lot or is having severe diarrhea or vomiting, then seeking out care from another vet or even an emergency clinic may be a good idea. Keeping her bottom clean and dry can help, and feeding a bland meal of some boiled chicken may help as well until you can be seen.

Yes, Sansa needs to see her veterinarian today. Blood can be present in the stool for many reasons including the change in food but the clopidogrel is an anticoagulant so you need to be certain that the platelet levels are not being affected and causing internal bleeding. This is a very rare and uncommon side effect but it's best to be safe. The doctor will likely check her platelet levels and likely some other diagnostics. Make sure to bring in a sample of the stool in case the doctor needs to check for parasites or bacterial overgrowth (which is very common). Sansa will likely receive medications to help her to feel better quickly. Best of luck.

Bring a stool sample. They likely will prescribe metronidazole (flagyl) for the diarrhea and possibly check her stool for parasites. The blood indicates inflammation and is common to see when the diarrhea has been going on this long. Common causes of diarrhea are: food sensitivities, ate something that didn't agree with her, bacterial or viral infections, toxins, metabolic diseases, pancreatitis, irritable bowl disease, intestinal parasites. Oh my. Poor kitty. Once a kitty gets this sick it is imperative to take them to the vet right away for testing and treatment. She could have a number of things going on with her including w foreign body obstruction, Toxin ingestion or even underlying kidney disease. It is unlikely she will get better without veterinary care. You can try offering her a small amount of tuna or boiled plain chicken and rice and 1-2 tsp of karo syrup to keep her blood glucose up tonight if you absolutely cannot get her seen right away. But an ER vet visit should be highly considered if possible. If not then get her seen as soon as possible tomorrow morning. I hope that your cat Dinah is able to make a full and speedy recovery. I'm quite concerned that she has diarrhea with bright red blood in it and is very lethargic. Based on this, I think she should see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies.
