My 6-week-old kitten has bloody diarrhea & vomiting. Should I go to vet?

Poor kitten! I think you're in the right for trying to get in sooner to have her checked out by your vet. If she is bleeding a lot or is having severe diarrhea or vomiting, then seeking out care from another vet or even an emergency clinic may be a good idea. Keeping her bottom clean and dry can help, and feeding a bland meal of some boiled chicken may help as well until you can be seen.

Sorry to hear this. I'm sure this must be very frustrating and difficult to deal with. Unfortunately, I do recommend that Poppy goes back to the vet. Throwing up blood is very concerning, because this indicates that she is losing blood through her gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to anemia (low blood count). Kittens don't have much to lose, so it's imperative that she be evaluated and treated as soon as possible. I understand that it's difficult to keep taking Poppy back and forth to the vet. I also wouldn't have the time to do this during normal business hours. You may consider having her hospitalized until she gets better. You can ask your vet about this. Most vet clinics will offer for clients to drop their pet off and hospitalize them. This will be a bit more expensive, but may be worthwhile considering that she will likely need a few visits to the vet until the problem is completely taken care of. I'm quite concerned that she has diarrhea with bright red blood in it and is very lethargic. Based on this, I think she should see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Because this has been going on for so long, I recommend taking Nuru to a vet for a physical exam and a stool sample test. He could have microscopic parasites that need to be treated. Not all dewormer medications treat all intestinal parasites so it helps to know what he has. If that test is negative, I would recommend an infectious disease test (leukemia/FIV). If all that is normal, the vet can discuss his nutrition. Good luck and kisses to Nuru!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sansa! Since Sansa has been sick for a week you need to take her to the Vet today. Especially with tomorrow being Thanksgiving. Causes of diarrhea and vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral and bacterial infections, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, dietary indiscretion, food allergy or intolerance. Blood in the stool indicates inflammation in the colon and makes antibiotics necessary to prevent secondary bacterial translocation in to the blood stream. Call your Vet when they open today, bring a stool sample and have Sansa examine and medications started. I hope this helps and I wish Sansa a speedy recovery. Happy Thanksgiving!

Withhold food for so long in such a small kitten is not recommended. Diarrhea is a signs referring to a intestinal problem. It could be due to parasitic infestation (very common in kittens) dietary indiscretion, inflammatory disease, bacterial diseases or viral diseases. You could provide bland food (boiled breast chicken or white fish or gastrointestinal commercial diet) for a 24-36 but, if she continues to have diarrhea, might get dehydrated and therefore need to be checked by a veterinarian. Also if you can spot blood in the faces or if she get lethargic and not eating, or if she start vomiting, I would suggest to have her checked by your veterinarian as soon as possible.

As long as she’s feeling fine and eating and drinking she should be fine. Please get her back on cat food and water only and this loose stool should resolve without treatment. When cats have bowel irritation they can pass small amounts of blood. If she’s not eating well, not drinking or the diarrhea lasts more than a day then please take her in for an exam and treatment.
