My kitten has parasites. Is antiparasitic medicine safe for them?

If Silk is diagnosed with intestinal parasites there are medications that can be used in young kittens. Depending on his signs and symptoms there are disorders young kittens can have that can be treated. But I'd showinf signs of GI disease I recommend a vet visit as the earlier diagnosis is made the sooner treatment can be started.

I am a little concerned about many over-the-counter deworming products as they are often not effective and sometimes even cause some toxicity issues. I recommend a full exam for these kittens by your veterinarian, and a product like pyrantel as a dewomer because it is safe and effective for kittens. This way your vet can see if there is something physically wrong with the kitten that is having trouble passing stools.

There are over the counter dewormers, but I recommend getting them seen. The over the counter medications don't always work. And it also depends on the parasite. The most commonly used dewormer in kittens is called fenbendazole, and is given for a few cycles based on the life cycles of most intestinal parasites. Ponazuril, while not specifically approved for dogs/cats, has been used safely for many cases of coccidia. Often the treatment chosen is based on the veterinarian's training, experience and drugs available. You can discuss using Ponazuril with your veterinarian and if he/she would be comfortable prescribing it.

Hi there! I hate to disagree with your veterinarian - but personally, I never recommend underdosing pets with flea/heartworm medication, as this can cause the meds to not be effective. In fact, it's recommended to round up to the next higher weight range if there is any doubt about which one the pet fits into, or if their weight is borderline. This is because these meds have a very high margin of safety, so the risks of underdosing are much greater. For this reason, personally, I would use the higher weight range for your 10+ lb kitty unless your vet has a specific reason not to recommend this in her case. Advantage Multi, like Revolution, is absorbed internally - this is how it's able to treat intestinal parasites and prevent heartworm disease. There is no problem with using either of these monthly long-term, as they're both extremely safe medications in cats :)

Yes, you can as long as product and dosage are appropriate. The route of administration would depend on the treatment itself (some are tablets some other are spot on). As long as the product is on prescription and of good quality, there is no most effective way.
