My 10lb cat needs Advantage Multi. Is it safe and effective long-term?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

Hi! I got some advantage multi from the vet for cats 5 to 9 lbs . They said it would be okay for my kitty who's a little over ten lbs. do you think that will be okay / effective ? Also , this is the first time using advantage ( heard diff things that fleas have developed a resistance to it ?) how can I tell if it's working for her ? Also, is advantage "safer" than revolution because it doesn't enter the bloodstream ? I'm a little concerned about the long term effects of monthly application. Thx!

Hi there! I hate to disagree with your veterinarian - but personally, I never recommend underdosing pets with flea/heartworm medication, as this can cause the meds to not be effective. In fact, it's recommended to round up to the next higher weight range if there is any doubt about which one the pet fits into, or if their weight is borderline. This is because these meds have a very high margin of safety, so the risks of underdosing are much greater. For this reason, personally, I would use the higher weight range for your 10+ lb kitty unless your vet has a specific reason not to recommend this in her case.

Advantage Multi, like Revolution, is absorbed internally - this is how it's able to treat intestinal parasites and prevent heartworm disease. There is no problem with using either of these monthly long-term, as they're both extremely safe medications in cats :)

It is likely to be safe but poorly effective as it would not have enough active ingredients for the size of cat. This would mean you would be undertreating and encouraging drug resistance in fleas (but not reducing the risk of any side effects should they occur). Hello, you can use Advantage Multi for cats which is good for fleas, roundworms, hookworms, ear mites, and heartworm. In addition, you can use a seresto collar for cats which is good for cats and dogs. Before starting advantage multi, you should have him tested for heartworm. The rabies and his other yearly vaccines (FVRCP) should continued to be given yearly especially if he continues to be an indoor and outdoor cat. Hope this helps and best of luck.

What's safe for hairless senior cat: fleas, mosquitos, no-see-ums?

Frontline is very safe and well tolerated in cats. So is Advantage Multi- not Advantix- but Advantage Multi- (which also protects your cat against heart-worm disease and intestinal parasites as well)- these products are very safe for cats and they do very well for fleas and a little for ticks. Frontline does not not work for mosquitoes or no see ums. For that you need a product like a Seresto collar- whenever you get into these products the safety is a little less but Seresto is very safe and pretty well tolerated by most casts. It is not like the old flea collar that had Amitraz (those are NOT safe!). I would suggest a Seresto collar and an oral Feline Heartgard chew or topical Advanatge Multi for your cat (combo of both). But you should check with your vet for more info for your particular cat.

Hi Alan. I prefer topical like Advantage multi or revolution for cats because they tend to last longer and be more effective. There are also medications available orally like cap star and comfort is for felines! Hope this helps!
