What's the best and safest coccidia treatment for my young kittens?

If it were my kitty I would start the metronidazole right away. Metronidazole adverse reactions are not that common and it can at least help with the inflammation of the gut that is caused by the coccidia until the proper dewormer is made available. It can be normal to have periods of explosive diarrhea or multiple defecation’s for up to seven days after the treatment starts. My advice is as follows: As long as he continues to eat normally, drink normally, play, and not vomit, I would continue with the treatment without going back to the vet. If he seems lethargic or sick or he just does not seem himself, however, I would take him back to the vet or call the vet as soon as possible to get a consultation. If you decide to keep him at home and continue the treatment, the diarrhea and related side effects of the medications should be gone by 7 to 10 days after the treatment began. Coccidia can be treated fairly easy. I would suggest you keep your cat separated from the kitten until the kitten's stool is free of coccidia. If you adopt the kitten while under treatment for coccidia, keep your cat and the kitten separate and give them their own litter box. You are correct about Pyrantel not treating tapeworms. Septran (trimethoprim sulfa) is an antibiotic drug that does not treat parasites. In order to kill the tapeworms you will need to get a drug called praziquantel.

The current thinking is to treat these cats with fenbendazole & a probiotic like Purina FortFlora or Proviable KP. Check with your vet about switching to the fenbendazole. Take care.

No. The over the counter medications are impossible to dose for a 1.5# dog. You will overdose her. Not only that but coccidia is a protozoan parasite and many over the counter medications do not treat this. Yes they certainly work, but they are rarely useful and used and the risk of overdosage is very high. It is definitively best to treat the underlying cause instead of of giving symptomatic treatments.
