My kitten's anal protrusion after deworming. Should I worry?

Thanks for using PetCoach. I’m sorry to hear about Lulu! Some mild protrusion during defecation and for a minute after is not uncommon and is usually nothing the worry about. However, I always deworm these guys anyways, as roundworms are a common cause of rectal prolapse. Something like this usually works if that’s the problem. (Shouldn’t be a problem for the hypoallergenic trial.) If you are seeing more than 5mm of red anal tissue or it is staying “out” for more than 2 minutes, it’s time to see the vet. Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There are many causes to diarrhea with a red perhaps inflamed anus. Parasites could be the cause or a bacterial or viral infection. I would take your kitten to your veterinarian soon for a fecal test where they will test his stool for parasites and bacteria and/or certain viruses that could be causing the diarrhea. They may Rx a medication to your kitten depending on what the veterinarian discovers on the fecal test. Best of luck! I hope this has helped.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mindy. Yes, I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. Cats that have parasites frequently have more than one type. It is best to have her examined and a stool sample tested. Sometimes the anus can be res from straining to defecate. I hope this information helps!

She could be scooting for several reasons. If she has a high worm burden then she may be passing them in her stool as they die off. Her anal gland could be irritating her (not common in such a young kitten), she could have pooo stuck to her rear end, or it could be itchy due to a scrape or injury. If externally it looks normal then I would wait and see if she is still scooting tomorrow. Best of luck and have fun with your new kitten!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nimbus! His anal/perineal area is likely stretched from the pressure of hard stool and straining. It is likely to eventually look normal. But it will take time and there is a slim chance that it will always protrude. As long as he defeates normally without straining if it is permanent then it is likely just cosmetic. I hope this helps and I wish you the best!

This can be quite uncomfortable and can progress to the point where she could develop a prolapsed rectum. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine this further and test her blood as well to make sure she has no abnormalities that need to be addressed. With the prolapse you are talking about, this may need surgical correction where the rectum is reduced back into place and a suture pattern is placed to keep it from re-prolapsing. The stitches are removed after a week or so. This problem likely happened from when she was giving birth to the kittens due to the strain of pushing them out. I hope this helps! Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If it has gone back to normal, then it likely was just a bit harder for him to pass that bit of poop. This could have been a one-off episode for Pumpkin, or it could be a sign that his poops are too hard. You can try just monitoring him and feeling his poop to see if it is hard or squishy. If it is hard, or very wide for his anus, then try adding canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling, just plain canned pumpkin) to his diet. This will increase fibre. Also, with his name it is fitting that this should help him. Otherwise, just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't stay out. If it comes out and stays out, this is a true emergency which requires fixing right away. Best of luck with Pumpkin.
