Why is my cat with kittens having diarrhea and a protruding anus?

I would recommend that you have Princess seen by your veterinarian. A rectal prolapse may need surgical correction and will get worse with time, if left untreated. Diarrhea can exacerbate a prolapse. An infection with a parasite called coccidia can cause diarrhea and causes enough irritation in some pets to cause a prolapse. Your veterinarian may recommend checking a stool sample to see if this is part of the problem. I would also recommend that you have Princess spayed to prevent future litters of kittens. Unspayed female cats are at higher risk for developing mammary cancer later in life and uterine infections.

Thanks for using PetCoach. I’m sorry to hear about Lulu! Some mild protrusion during defecation and for a minute after is not uncommon and is usually nothing the worry about. However, I always deworm these guys anyways, as roundworms are a common cause of rectal prolapse. Something like this usually works if that’s the problem. Oh my. Put some lubricating jelly on this prolapsed rectum right away. Multiple kitties straining to defecate and having loose stools with blood is highly suspicious for intestinal parasites or a bacterial infection. These kitties need to have their feces tested and then placed on the appropriate dewormer. Whipworms in particular are know for causing severe straining in pets. In the meantime I would suggest adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in their food daily to add fiber and help reduce some of the straining. They could also use some probiotics as well. Over the counter Culturelle is equivalent to many of the pet formulated ones such as Fortiflora. Then it’s highly advised to take the kitty with the rectal prolapse to your local ER vet right away since your regular veterinarian is closed. The lubricating jelly can hopefully buy you some time if you can’t find an open vet right away. Good luck to you and your kitties and I hope they feel better soon. Take care.

Poor Jameson. This is pretty common in kittens for many different reasons. It could be stress related from moving to her new home. She also could have some intestinal parasites that is causing the diarrhea. You said you have not changed her food, so I"m assuming she is eating what she was on at the shelter. IF you have changed from that, this could also be causing diarrhea. I worry about her anus bulging. They strain when having diarrhea and this could lead to a rectal prolapse. I think she should see a veterinarian so they can test for intestinal parasites and hopefully get her started on some diarrhea medications and possibly a bland diet. They can also help with dehydration by giving her some fluids under her skin as these little guys can become dehydrated very quickly. Hope this little girl can get turned around soon.

As long as she continues to eat well, this should slowly resolve over the course of the next 3-4 days. If it does not, or if Naughtt develops any other unusual clinical signs, I recommend having her seen by a veterinarian, as an unrelated issue may be present. I hope this is helpful!

Hi there. Smokey likely needs a fecal exam at your local veterinarian to test for intestinal parasites. This is very common in small kittens-but upon presenting with a prolapsed anus it becomes more serious. Best to be seen as soon as possible. Hope this helps!

If he wasn't weaned and is now eating a kitten food, that could be causing the bloody diarrhea. I agree, it does look like his anus is protruding a bit. Given that he's eating and drinking and otherwise acting normally, it's fine to wait until the morning to wait to take him into a vet. He should see one first thing in the morning to get treated. Tonight, keep feeding him and giving him water, and keep him warm and comfortable. I hope this helps!
