My kitten's bum is protruding after constipation. What can I do?

It could be from intestinal parasites, because she is so thin or it could be normal for her. Your Vet can take a look when you bring her in for her first set of shots and deworming. Bring a stool sample. I bet once she puts on weight, starts eating a good diet and is dewormed it will look more normal back there! I hope this helps and good luck!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If it has gone back to normal, then it likely was just a bit harder for him to pass that bit of poop. This could have been a one-off episode for Pumpkin, or it could be a sign that his poops are too hard. You can try just monitoring him and feeling his poop to see if it is hard or squishy. If it is hard, or very wide for his anus, then try adding canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling, just plain canned pumpkin) to his diet. This will increase fibre. Also, with his name it is fitting that this should help him. Otherwise, just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't stay out. If it comes out and stays out, this is a true emergency which requires fixing right away. Best of luck with Pumpkin.

I would recommend that you have Kiara checked out by the vet. Constipation can be a serious issue in kittens, and she may need an enema, which should only be administered by the vet to avoid tearing the delicate colon tissue. The vet may recommend an x-ray to check for any congenital issues that could lead to the constipation. You can try using a moist rag and squeezing very **gently** on the outside of the bulging anus to try to help remove some of the feces.

Thanks for using PetCoach. I’m sorry to hear about Lulu! Some mild protrusion during defecation and for a minute after is not uncommon and is usually nothing the worry about. However, I always deworm these guys anyways, as roundworms are a common cause of rectal prolapse. Something like this usually works if that’s the problem. There is nothing I would be worried about as the anus seems only mildly inflamed. Usually this is caused by softer feces/diarrhoea. I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. As long as the rectum is prolapsed (a red tubular structure is coming out of the anus) and she isn't scooting what you are seeing is probably normal. Sometimes the anus can look prominent after a bowel movement or if she has to go. Have a good day

The rectal protrusion may be from her straining to poop after the dewormer. Especially if you find worms in her stool, I recommend being super diligent about handwashing after petting her/cleaning her litterbox as most intestinal parasites in cats can be transmitted to people. If the anal protrusion does not return, then I would have her poop re-checked at the vet’s in 2-3 weeks for intestinal parasites. If it returns, then a prescription steroid/antibiotic ointment applied twice daily for a week or even preparation H cream may help. Good luck!
