How many calories and wet food does my indoor/outdoor cat need daily?

For an average healthy weight 0.5 kg kitten with an expect 4-5 kg adult weight the caloric intake should be about 150 calories. However, for every 0.5kg that the kitten gains the caloric intake increases by about 50 calories . So at 1 kg he should be offered about 200 calories, and at 1.5 kg he should be offered about 250 calories. Once he is an adult and has stopped growing the caloric intake usually decreases to about 250-300 per day. This is average. Some require more and some less. Somehow this makes no sense, especially since you are mixing kcal and cal. Feed your kitty 3- 4 times a day (to be able to eat as much as necessary). Your vet recommends 180 cal (not 1800), so she would need 1 2/3 cans of Merrick per day, ie split in 3-4 feed portions.

Hello, depending on her lifestyle, indoor only cats should be fed atleast twice daily. This can be a variety of dry and wet food and should not exceed more than 1 cup of dry food per day or more than 1 can per day. The bags usually over estimate the amount of food animals need. I would recommend feeding about 75% of what's on the bag/instructions IF that's the only thing your cat is eating. If they are eating half wet and half dry, decrease the amount proportionally. Another (easier) approach, is to ask your veterinarian for a recommended calorie count for each cat. Most adult cats need about 200 calories per day and young, intact cats need anywhere from 2-3 times this amount.

Food labels can be extremely confusing! The 1197 kcal/kg is a calculation of calories on a "dry matter" basis, which allows you to easily compare a compatible calorie count between different brands and types (wet or dry) of foods. Since canned foods have a very high water content, there is a much lower calorie count per can. To answer your question, yes, this means that there are 102 calories per can of food. Hi and thanks for posting! For Easel who is a spayed adult cat, she'll need about 220-250 calories a day to maintain her current weight and between 180-200 if she needs to lose weight. Every food can and product bag contain the calories per cup or calories per can on the label which you can use to adjust her cups per day accordingly. I hope this helps!
